To install cabinet drawer slides, identify the exact slide model, verify its required clearances, mount the cabinet and drawer members in line, then test and adjust the drawer before tightening every fastener. Side-mount and concealed undermount slides use different layouts, so follow the instruction sheet for the hardware you have rather than relying on a universal spacing rule.
Identify the slide and find its instructions
First determine whether the hardware is side-mount, center-mount, or concealed undermount. Record the brand and model or kit code, then locate the matching installation sheet. Blum’s Runner Assembly Instructions library directs users to match the code on the product to its instructions and includes system-specific guidance, including a face-frame TANDEM demonstration.
Do not use a side-mount procedure for an undermount runner. The mounting locations, clearances, and fitting steps depend on the system and model.
Check dimensions and prepare the cabinet
Before drilling, measure the cabinet opening width, drawer-box width, cabinet depth, and slide length. Compare those measurements with the chosen slide’s requirements, including side clearance, setback, screw type, and whether rear brackets or other hardware are needed. Check the package too: some slides do not include mounting hardware.

Clearance figures are product-specific. For example, Accuride’s Model 3832EC instructions call for at least 0.50 inch of side space and identify a drawer 1-1/16 inches narrower than the opening as optimum for that model. They also say the drawer box should not exceed the slide length. These figures are not general rules for other slides.
Gather a tape measure, pencil, drill/driver, and fasteners specified by the manufacturer. A drawer slide installation jig or positioning brackets can make it easier to hold a consistent position, but they are optional aids. Rockler describes brackets that rest on a rail or cabinet bottom as a reference stop in its drawer installation brackets guide.

Install side-mount slides
The following sequence applies to the cited side-mount arrangement, not to every slide design. Follow your model’s release method and mounting diagram where they differ. Accuride’s mounting instructions show the cabinet member mounted first, followed by attaching the drawer to the extended inner members.
- Separate the slide members if the model allows it. Use the specified release or disconnect mechanism; do not force the parts apart.
- Position the cabinet members. Extend the slides to reach mounting slots if needed. Set the left and right members at matching heights and depths, parallel to each other and to the cabinet sides. Start the specified fasteners in the appropriate slots, leaving them loose enough to permit adjustment.
- Attach the drawer members. Fasten each member to its matching drawer side at the height and setback shown in the model instructions. Use only the specified holes and screw types.
- Fit the drawer and test its travel. Engage the drawer members with the cabinet members and open and close the drawer several times. Check for binding, uneven gaps, or a front that sits out of square. Adjust the slotted positions until movement is smooth.
- Tighten and recheck. After alignment and travel are satisfactory, tighten the fasteners and test the drawer again. Accuride’s instructions say: “Adjust slide positions until movement is smooth. Then tighten all screws; if necessary, use more screws to secure slides and complete installation.”
Account for cabinet construction and slide type
Face-frame and frameless cabinets may require different mounting hardware or positioning. Some face-frame installations use brackets; other products provide a direct mounting method. Concealed undermount systems also have their own instructions and should not be treated as side-mount hardware. Confirm the cabinet style and the exact runner code before making holes, then use the product’s installation sheet.

The available instructions establish that mounting details vary by slide system and model; they do not establish a cross-brand comparison of load capacity, extension, or performance. Choose hardware by checking the exact model’s clearance, depth, mounting, and load requirements rather than assuming those properties from its general slide type.
