If a Roll·Rite tarp will not cover or uncover, first identify the exact tarp-system family and find its matching manual in Roll·Rite’s document library. Its front-to-back, roll-off/DC, power-cable, and STS side-to-side systems do not all share the same wiring or troubleshooting steps. Use the manual’s required prior-to-service procedure before working on the system.
Start with the correct Roll·Rite manual
Locate the system model and configuration, then match it to the manuals and diagrams in the official document library. Roll·Rite says its library brings together installation information, electrical diagrams, service manuals, and product brochures. It also lists procedures for releasing stored energy before service on front-to-back/DC and side-to-side systems. Follow the procedure for your system; do not assume a generic service sequence is safe for every tarp assembly.
The troubleshooting indications below apply to the DC Series solid-state relay context covered by Roll·Rite’s DC Series Installation and Service Owners Manual. They are not universal Roll·Rite fault codes. Confirm that your system uses this relay and check the applicable manual revision before relying on a flash pattern.
What DC Series relay flashes can indicate
| Relay indication | Meaning in the DC Series table | Manual-directed next check |
|---|---|---|
| Two flashes | System current limit reached | Look for mechanical binding or a blockage, and check whether debris is preventing the motor brake from releasing or the motor from rotating. |
| Three flashes | Overcurrent | Check the motor or motor-supply harness for a short, following the manual’s electrical procedure. |
| Four flashes | Over-temperature | Allow the system to cool for 30 minutes. If the fault remains, use the manual’s further instructions. |
| Five flashes | Overvoltage | The manual includes voltage and connection checks. Consult it for the exact procedure rather than relying on a partial summary. |
| Seven flashes | Short circuit in the motor or motor circuit | Check the motor and supply wiring as directed. The manual describes possible controller replacement only after those checks. |
These indications help narrow the fault; they do not establish that a particular component has failed. Do not bypass the relay, safety protections, or wiring safeguards to make the tarp move.

Diagnose a tarp that will not move
Roll·Rite’s DC Series troubleshooting material lists several possible causes for a tarp that will not cover or uncover. The observed symptom and controller indication matter: a tarp that stops against an obstruction calls for a different investigation than one with no response or an electrical fault.
- No movement or weak movement: A low vehicle battery is one listed possibility. The manual identifies charging the battery or operating the engine so the alternator can run as actions to address it.
- Movement stops or the system strains: Check for an obstruction or mechanical binding, including debris at the motor brake, as directed by the matching manual.
- A relay fault indicates overcurrent or a short: The manual calls for checks of the motor and motor-supply wiring. These are manual-guided electrical diagnostics, not live-wire or bypass tests.
- The switch or harness may be involved: The DC Series manual includes switch and harness continuity checks for “will not cover or uncover” symptoms. Use its procedure and the correct wiring diagram rather than guessing at connections.
If a check requires access to wiring, the motor, or stored-energy components, stop and follow the exact prior-to-service instructions for the system. If the symptom or controller indication does not match the manual, contact Roll·Rite or a qualified service provider rather than applying another system’s troubleshooting chart.

Distinguish tarp damage from a system fault
A tear in the tarp fabric is different from a motor, electrical, mechanical-binding, or structural failure. Roll·Rite says a repair kit may address a minor tear until the tarp is replaced. For more substantial damage, it recommends professional consultation to assess whether the tear could spread or whether replacement is needed to protect system performance and avoid further equipment damage. Use a kit only for a minor fabric tear and only if it is compatible with the tarp material; it will not fix a system that will not move.

Choose replacement parts by configuration
Do not order a motor, relay, switch, breaker, or harness based on the general name “Roll·Rite tarp.” Parts lists are configuration-specific: Roll·Rite’s product 69300 parts list and DC850 product page illustrate that component information is tied to particular products. They do not establish fit for every Roll·Rite system.
Identify the system model and configuration, consult its official parts list, and verify the replacement with the OEM. Roll·Rite’s repair guidance puts it plainly: “When you run into challenges with your tarp and tarping system, it’s always best to check with your OEM for their recommendations on replacement parts.”

Operating precautions that help prevent damage
Follow the operating manual supplied for your exact system. In the surfaced Roll·Rite operating manual, the company warns that damage caused by improper installation, use, or operator error is not covered under warranty; using parts not supplied with the system can cause damage or unnecessary wear and may void warranty coverage.
- The manual says to wind and unwind the tarp below 20 mph.
- It states: “Tarp should always be wound up over the top of the axle shaft.” Winding underneath can bring debris into the tarp and jam or damage the assembly.
These instructions come from the surfaced operating manual; check the manual matched to your system for its applicable operating and service requirements.
