The best black algae killer is a pool algaecide whose current label explicitly addresses black algae and is compatible with your pool’s finish and water-treatment system. No comparative testing here establishes one product as universally superior. Correct identification, surface-appropriate brushing, balanced water and label-specific application are essential; dark marks can also be metal stains rather than algae.

What black algae is—and why identification matters

Leslie’s describes black algae as cyanobacteria that can attach to pool surfaces and resist treatment because of a protective outer layer. It can be particularly stubborn where it takes hold on a porous finish. But a dark mark alone does not confirm algae: metal staining can look similar. If you are unsure, seek a pool professional or water-testing service before adding chemicals.

Do not swim while visible black algae remains. Keep swimmers out during treatment and while sanitizer levels are high; reopen only after the water has been retested and its chemistry is within the selected product’s directions and the pool’s normal operating ranges.

How to choose a black algae treatment

Look for a current product label that explicitly addresses black algae, then check that its directions fit your pool volume, surface, sanitizer system and water chemistry. The available product listings do not establish comparative efficacy rankings, so a product marketed for black algae should not be called the best for every pool.

#1 Best Overall
Pool Mate 1-Quart Premium Black Algaecide for Pool, Made in USA
  • Controls the growth of black algae in swimming pools
  • Concentrated formula for all pool types
  • Weekly maintenance dose: 4 ounces per 10,000 gallons
  • Non-foaming
  • Non-metallic algaecide
  • Confirm the active treatment and label: Follow the exact label for the product you select. Do not transfer another product’s dosage, application sequence or wait time.
  • Match brushing to the finish: Leslie’s recommends wire or stainless-steel brushes for gunite, plaster or concrete, and softer nylon brushes for vinyl-lined, pebble or quartz surfaces. Check the pool and brush manufacturers’ guidance before scrubbing to avoid damage.
  • Check chemistry and compatibility: Test pH and total alkalinity, and verify that the product suits your sanitizer system. Leslie’s warns that copper above 0.6 ppm may cause staining when using its named Black Algae Killer; this is a product-context warning, not a universal threshold.
  • Assess the full treatment: Consider whether the label requires brushing, shocking, pump operation, filtration or a retest before swimming. A bundled kit is not proof that every included chemical is needed or suitable for your pool.

What Leslie’s Black Algae Killer directions say

Leslie’s product listing identifies its Black Algae Killer as an algaecide formulated for black algae. The listing gives these product-specific directions; always check the current product label, which controls application:

Use stated on listing Listed amount Other listed direction
Visible black algae growth 12 oz per 10,000 gallons Brush spots before application; distribute around the pool rather than concentrating in one spot.
Maintenance 6 oz per 10,000 gallons every 5–7 days Follow current label directions and retest as directed.
Water pH before application 7.2–7.8 The listing says: “Before applying, adjust pool water pH to 7.2-7.8 as determined by a suitable test kit.”

The listing also says to brush daily for two days after treatment if needed. These amounts and conditions apply to this named product listing, not to other brands. Leslie’s separate listing for a copper algaecide represents another marketed product, but its existence does not establish that a copper treatment is the right choice for black algae or eliminate the need to assess staining risk.

A careful treatment and cleanup sequence

Leslie’s treatment guide recommends the following general sequence for its named treatment approach. Product directions can differ, so follow the current label for the algaecide and any shock you use rather than treating this retailer procedure as universal.

  1. Test the water. Check pH and total alkalinity with a suitable pool-water test kit. Resolve uncertain dark staining before treating it as algae.
  2. Balance the water and prepare the equipment. Adjust chemistry as directed by the selected products and operate the pump as instructed.
  3. Brush the affected surfaces. Use a brush suited to the finish. Follow the selected product’s sequence; Leslie’s guide recommends shocking at least 24 hours before its named algaecide.
  4. Apply the algaecide exactly as labeled. Measure for pool volume, distribute as directed, and do not combine or sequence chemicals unless their labels say to do so.
  5. Continue cleanup. Brush again as directed, vacuum settled debris and clean the filter. Leslie’s recommends cleaning a cartridge filter or backwashing sand or DE filters after treatment.
  6. Retest before reopening. Keep swimmers out while chlorine is high. Return the pool to use only when testing confirms chemistry is within the applicable product directions and normal operating ranges.

Preventing a recurrence

Leslie’s recommends maintaining pool-water chemistry and washing swimsuits and cleaning pool toys or floats after visits to lakes or oceans. Its guide also recommends filter cleaning after treatment. These are practical maintenance suggestions; the available guidance does not quantify how much each measure reduces recurrence.
