For everyday cakes and cookies, a compact tilt-head model may be convenient; for frequent large batches or dense bread dough, prioritize usable capacity and task suitability rather than choosing by wattage alone. No single model is best for every household.
What makes a mixer planetary?
A planetary mixer keeps its bowl stationary while the mixing attachment moves around inside it. The design is commonly associated with KitchenAid stand mixers. It is different from mixers that use another bowl-and-tool motion, so compare machines by how they work as well as by advertised capacity.
Choose the head style that works in your kitchen
Tilt-head
On a tilt-head mixer, the head hinges back to give access to the bowl. This can make it convenient to add ingredients and remove the bowl, and a smaller model may suit a kitchen where counter space or storage matters. Allow enough vertical clearance to raise the head.
Bowl-lift
On a bowl-lift mixer, a lever raises the bowl on support arms toward the mixing head. This configuration is commonly positioned for larger or denser batches. KitchenAid’s US buying guide says its larger bowl-lift models can be about 16–17 inches tall; check the exact model’s dimensions and the clearance needed to load and remove the bowl.

How much bowl capacity do you need?
Start with your usual recipe quantities and how often you make them. A bowl’s stated volume is not the same as the amount of dough or batter it can mix effectively. America’s Test Kitchen’s 2026 review suggests subtracting about 2 quarts from advertised bowl capacity as a rough estimate of usable capacity. That is the publisher’s rule of thumb, not a universal engineering standard.
| Typical use | What to prioritize | Capacity guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional cakes, cookies, and dough | Convenient access, fit, storage, and a bowl suited to your usual recipe size | Choose based on actual batch quantities; do not assume the advertised bowl volume is all usable |
| Frequent large bread or pizza batches | Manufacturer batch limits, usable capacity, stability, and suitability for dense dough | America’s Test Kitchen recommends at least 5 quarts stated capacity, corresponding to about 3 quarts or more of actual capacity, for frequent large batches |
| Especially large, frequent batches | Extra usable capacity and a machine suited to sustained heavy-duty work | America’s Test Kitchen says it prefers 7 quarts stated capacity and 5 quarts actual capacity for this use |
These recommendations are specific to America’s Test Kitchen’s 2026 review. Do not directly equate liters and quarts without converting units, or assume that two mixers with the same stated bowl volume have the same usable dough capacity.

Match the mixer to the work, not just its wattage
Wattage is one specification, not a stand-alone measure of mixing performance. Bosch’s UK buying guide advises considering higher wattage and larger capacity for larger quantities of bread dough, while also cautioning that wattage by itself does not necessarily indicate performance. For frequent dense dough, check the manufacturer’s guidance on batch limits and intended tasks alongside capacity and power.
Consider size, weight, storage, and cost
Measure the space where the mixer will sit, including the overhead room needed to access the bowl. If you expect to move it between uses, consider its weight as well as its footprint. Then weigh those practical constraints against how often you will use the appliance and the budget available. Prices and stock vary by market and retailer, so check current local listings rather than relying on a fixed price comparison.

What tools and attachments will you actually use?
Standard mixing tools handle different jobs: KitchenAid describes the whisk, flat beater, and dough hook for their respective mixing tasks. Optional attachments can extend a stand mixer’s uses; Bosch’s UK guide, for example, lists options for pasta, grating, grinding, and mincing. Buy for tasks your household will genuinely do, and verify fit before purchasing: compatibility varies by manufacturer, product line, and model.
For KitchenAid’s US lineup, the current comparison chart lists a 3.5-quart Artisan Mini and a 4.5-quart Classic, along with larger 6-quart and 7-quart choices. KitchenAid UK’s FAQ lists capacities from 3L to 6.9L across its range at the time of retrieval. These are market-specific lineups, not interchangeable availability claims; check the exact model and region. KitchenAid’s model-specific cookie-quantity statements are manufacturer claims, not independent capacity tests.

Which mixers are worth comparing?
America’s Test Kitchen’s 2026 review names the Ankarsrum Assistent Original 7 Liter Stand Mixer as its pick for frequent heavy-duty, large-batch baking, and the KitchenAid Classic Plus Series 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer as its mid-priced pick for solid performance. These are that publication’s recommendations, not a universal ranking. The Ankarsrum is an alternative mixing design, not a planetary mixer.
Use those picks as starting points for comparing intended use, capacity, access, footprint, and tool compatibility. The evidence cited here does not establish a universally best-performing mixer, current prices or stock, long-term reliability, or repair costs.

A practical buying checklist
- Write down the quantities in your most common recipes, especially if you make bread or pizza.
- Choose tilt-head or bowl-lift access based on how you add ingredients and remove the bowl.
- Check usable capacity and manufacturer batch guidance, not just the bowl’s stated volume.
- Measure counter space and overhead clearance; account for weight if the machine will be stored away.
- List the optional attachments you would truly use and confirm each one fits the exact mixer model.
- Compare current price and availability for your region only after narrowing the choice by fit and intended use.
