There is no single best lawn mower engine for every yard. The right choice depends on the mower it must power, the work and terrain, the engine’s intended use, and—if you are replacing one—whether its dimensions and mounting match your equipment. Compare engines on the same rating basis, then verify the exact model specifications in the manufacturer’s documentation.
Start with the mower and the work
Choose an engine for the mower application and workload, not by displacement or a headline power figure alone. Yard size and terrain help determine the mower class; engine choice then needs to suit that machine and its intended work. Briggs & Stratton describes engines for walk-behind, riding, and zero-turn mowers, while Honda’s listings distinguish residential, light-commercial/residential, and commercial applications.
Briggs & Stratton’s general guidance is that walk-behind mowers are usually a good choice for yards of about 3/4 acre or less. That is a mower-class guideline, not a rule that specifies an engine size or power rating. Briggs & Stratton’s mower-selection guide can help frame the choice.
How to compare engine ratings
Check what the manufacturer actually rates: small walk-behind engines may be described by gross torque, while horsepower is also used for larger engines. Briggs & Stratton explains, “Torque is a more accurate way to describe the capability or job capacity of an engine.” That is the company’s explanation of its rating approach, not an independent industry consensus. Its power-rating FAQ says gross horsepower figures are stated at 3600 rpm and gross torque figures at 2600 rpm under the procedures it identifies.

Gross ratings are standardized manufacturer figures, not a promise that the installed engine will produce that output in every mower or operating condition. Briggs & Stratton notes that equipment components, application, and environmental conditions can affect installed output. Use the ratings to compare specifications on a consistent basis, not to make a cross-brand performance ranking.
Representative Briggs & Stratton walk-behind ratings
The company’s 2026 walk/push mower table lists the following series figures as gross ratings. Horsepower and kilowatts are stated at 3600 rpm; torque is stated at 2600 rpm under the company’s rating procedures.

These are Briggs & Stratton series ratings, not evidence that one series will outperform another brand or be suitable for a particular mower. See the company’s walk/push mower engine table for its listed figures.
Compare application, configuration, and documentation
Displacement is only one part of the comparison. Note the intended application, engine configuration, shaft orientation, and whether the engine is designed for walk-behind or riding equipment. Honda’s official mower-engine listing illustrates how these attributes differ:

A useful shortlist compares candidates on the same terms: mower application, rating type and stated rpm, displacement, configuration, shaft and mounting needs, and availability of model-specific support. Manufacturer classifications help describe intended use; they do not establish a universal “best” engine.

- 1" x 3-5/32" shaft, tapped 7/16" with 1/4" keyway
- Common replacement engine for consumer riding mowers and z-turns
- Please measure your old engine crankshaft, as Briggs makes 1 x 3-5/32, 1-1/8 x 3-5/32, 1-1/8 x 3.94, 1-1/8 x 4-5/16
- Mounting holes are drilled only. Recommended to use nut and bolt or the self-tapping bolts from your existing equipment
Check fit before buying a replacement
A replacement engine must fit the mower as well as suit its workload. Record the mower’s make and model and the full stamped engine model, type, and code where available. For a cross-brand replacement, also gather the original engine brand, model number, and power rating. Then check the replacement’s shaft extension, mounting base, overall dimensions, and exhaust position and clearance against the mower.
- Do not select a replacement by horsepower or cc alone.
- Confirm whether mounting hardware is included; it may not be.
- Catalog listings can cover engines for different equipment and are not a guarantee of an exact match.
- If fit or an upgrade is uncertain, ask a dealer to verify the application before purchase.
Briggs & Stratton’s replacement-engine FAQ gives examples such as series 9P700 (5.50 gross torque, 140 cc), 10T800 (5.50 gross torque, 158 cc), and 126M00 (6.75 gross torque, 190 cc). These are examples of replacement-series specifications, not fit recommendations for a particular mower.

Use the exact engine manual for maintenance
Oil, fuel, filters, spark plugs, valve settings, and repair dimensions vary by engine model. Briggs & Stratton says oil helps manage temperature and friction and directs owners to model-specific information. Find the full engine model identification first, then use the corresponding manual for service intervals, fluid specifications, replacement parts, and repair procedures. Its oil guidance and engine specification support explain how to locate model-specific information; its maintenance resources cover tasks such as oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, and carburetor repair.
