To install line on a compatible Ryobi bump-feed head, remove the battery, align the head’s loading marks, feed one continuous piece of the correct line through both eyelets, center it, and wind it onto the spool. The line diameter and maximum length depend on the trimmer model and head, so check your operator’s manual before loading.
Before you start: confirm the model and line
Ryobi uses different trimmer models and head designs, so one line size or loading length does not apply to every machine. Find the model number on your trimmer and check its operator’s manual for the specified diameter and loading instructions.
Ryobi Australia’s instructions for the model families covered there specify 2 mm or 2.4 mm line, depending on the model. They describe cutting a piece approximately 3 m long and also state a maximum of 2.7 m per side. Install line on a compatible bump-feed head
- Make the trimmer safe. Remove the battery pack before handling the head. Set the tool on a level surface with the motor side down and the blade guard side up, as directed in Ryobi Australia’s instructions.
- Align the loading marks. Turn the bump knob until the indicator in its center lines up with the arrows on the outer spool.
- Cut and feed the line. Use the diameter and length specified for your model. Push one end through an eyelet on one side of the head and continue until it emerges from the opposite eyelet.
- Center the line. Pull it through until the two ends are the same length.
- Wind the line. Turn the bump knob using a speed winder, or rotate it by hand. Continue until the line is wound onto the spool.
- Check the loading. Make sure the line is even and the ends are not tangled before reinstalling the battery and using the trimmer.
If your head or line does not match these steps
Do not force line into a head that lacks the paired eyelets or loading marks described above. Trimmer heads vary; use the procedure in the manual for your exact model rather than assuming every Ryobi head reloads the same way.

What to expect from the REEL EASY+ head
