It tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, but it can also spread aggressively. In Florida, UF/IFAS classifies the wild type as invasive with no recommended uses, so check your location and the plant’s exact cultivar before planting.
Identify the plant before you grow it
Mexican petunia is an herbaceous perennial in the acanthus family, Acanthaceae. It is also called Mexican bluebell or Britton’s wild petunia. Names used for the species include Ruellia tweediana, R. brittoniana and R. caerulea; UF/IFAS lists these as synonyms of Ruellia simplex. The word “petunia” is common-name shorthand: this is not a plant in the genus Petunia.
The UF/IFAS plant directory describes plants growing to about 1 m tall, with green or purple stems and opposite, dark-green, lance-shaped leaves about 15–30 cm long and 1–2 cm wide. Trumpet-shaped flowers are usually purple, though white and pink forms occur, and measure about 4–8 cm across. Seed capsules contain multiple seeds and can split explosively when ripe. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions and the UF/IFAS Assessment provide Florida-focused identification and planting guidance.
When buying a plant, ask for its scientific name and exact cultivar, not just “Mexican petunia.” This matters especially in places where invasive-risk recommendations vary between wild-type plants and particular named cultivars.

Choose whether it is appropriate for your location
In Florida, the planting decision is not simply a matter of whether the plant will thrive. UF/IFAS currently lists wild-type Ruellia simplex as “Invasive (No Uses)” in North, Central and South Florida. Its Gardening Solutions guidance advises against planting it unless you can obtain a cultivar that has been tested and found not to be invasive, such as ‘Purple Showers’; it also names native Ruellia caroliniensis as an alternative.
Those recommendations are Florida-specific, not a universal legal or ecological classification. Elsewhere, check local Extension or invasive-plant guidance before planting. UF/IFAS’s detailed review cites a study in which ‘Purple Showers’ set no seed, but reports substantial viable seed production by ‘Morado Chi’ and ‘Chi Chi.’ It also describes seven Mayan and Aztec cultivars with highly reduced or undetectable fertility that were evaluated under UF/IFAS’s infraspecific taxon protocol and approved for release and use with caution in Florida. That approval is not a guarantee that a plant cannot spread: sterile cultivars can still expand through creeping lateral roots.

| Plant choice | What the Florida sources say | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Wild-type Ruellia simplex | UF/IFAS lists it as invasive with no uses in North, Central and South Florida. | Do not plant in Florida. Elsewhere, consult local guidance. |
| Named cultivar | Fertility differs by cultivar. ‘Purple Showers’ reportedly set no seed in a cited study; ‘Morado Chi’ and ‘Chi Chi’ produced substantial viable seed. Some evaluated cultivars are approved for use with caution in Florida. | Confirm the cultivar by its exact name and check the latest local assessment. Reduced seed production does not rule out vegetative spread. |
| Native Ruellia caroliniensis | UF/IFAS identifies it as a native alternative and notes it is less widely available. | Consider it in Florida and ask local native-plant sources or Extension for availability and suitability. |
UF/IFAS’s plant-directory page was updated October 2, 2026; its assessment page was updated January 30, 2026 and lists assessment years 2010, 2013 and 2023. Check the current assessment and local advice when making a planting decision, particularly for a named cultivar.
Provide suitable growing conditions
UF/IFAS describes Mexican petunia as able to grow in sun or shade, wet or dry conditions, and poor soil. This indicates broad tolerance, not a precise care schedule. The Florida sources do not establish a universal watering interval, fertilizer schedule, soil pH, pruning routine or overwintering plan for all climates.

Do not apply care instructions for true garden petunias automatically; they are a different genus. For local guidance on watering, seasonal care or climate limits, contact your Extension office. In any location where planting is appropriate, account for the plant’s ability to spread when choosing a site.
Understand how it spreads
Mexican petunia can reproduce through both seed and vegetative growth. UF/IFAS reports that seeds germinate readily and capsules disperse them by bursting. The plant also sends horizontal stems above and below ground; these can root at leaf nodes and form new plants. The UF/IFAS directory notes that wet seeds develop a gel-like coating that can help them stick to surfaces after drying.

Seed fertility and containment are therefore separate questions. A cultivar with little or no seed production may still spread through lateral growth. UF/IFAS reports that commercial propagation is done by seed or cuttings, and that cuttings root readily without auxin. These propagation details are useful for understanding why small pieces of plant material can matter; they are not a reason to propagate a plant that local guidance says not to grow.

For a small patch, hand-pulling can work only when all vegetative material is removed. Underground rhizomes can regrow, so removing visible stems alone is not enough. The UF/IFAS directory likewise warns that mowing, tillage or cutting off the tops without removing belowground growth is ineffective.

- Remove the whole plant. Pull or dig out the patch while taking care to remove underground stems and other vegetative material, not just the leaves and flowers.
- Watch for regrowth. Check the area after removal and address new growth; surviving belowground material can produce another flush.
- Replant where appropriate. If local guidance supports it, replace the removed plants with a suitable alternative rather than leaving bare ground.
UF/IFAS discusses ready-to-use herbicide studies but does not provide a one-size-fits-all chemical recipe. Products, labels and site conditions vary, and regrowth may require follow-up. If you consider herbicide, follow the product label for application, safety and disposal, and consult local Extension for advice tailored to your site, jurisdiction, nearby water and desirable plants. The UF/IFAS extension review covers propagation, spread and management.
