How to Prune Determinate Tomatoes Without Losing Fruit

Prune determinate tomatoes lightly: remove soil-level foliage, keep most fruit-bearing suckers, and consider limited lower sucker removal only when it fits your support plan.

Prune determinate tomatoes lightly: remove lower leaves that touch or may touch the soil, but do not routinely remove every sucker. Because determinate branches can carry part of the crop, sucker removal is best treated as optional and guided by the support system you plan to use.

How to tell whether a tomato is determinate

A determinate tomato stem ends in a flower cluster, which stops that stem’s upward growth. Determinate varieties also tend to ripen their crop over a shorter period than indeterminate tomatoes. If you are unsure of the variety, check its label or seed packet before pruning; the growth habit changes how much trimming makes sense. University of Illinois Extension describes the determinate growth habit.

Remove lower leaves separately from suckers

Bottom pruning means removing leaves low on the plant, especially foliage below the first fruiting truss. Take off leaves that touch the soil or are likely to do so. University of Illinois Extension recommends this to reduce exposure to soil-borne disease and improve airflow. This is distinct from removing suckers: a sucker is a side shoot growing where a leaf meets the main stem.

  1. Find the first cluster of developing fruit, called a fruiting truss.
  2. Remove lower leaves beneath that cluster, prioritizing any that rest on or nearly reach the soil.
  3. Leave healthy foliage above that point unless it is damaged or interfering with the plant’s support.

Should you remove suckers from determinate tomatoes?

There is no single extension recommendation for every determinate plant. One University of Illinois Extension article advises against sucker removal on determinate tomatoes, treating bottom pruning as the only pruning needed. Another Illinois source allows an exception for suckers below the first flower cluster. Utah State University Extension describes a more specific approach for determinate tomatoes grown with stake-and-weave support.

Default approach: keep most suckers

For a typical home garden, avoid extensive sucker removal. Side shoots can develop into fruit-bearing branches, so cutting them all away may reduce the plant’s potential crop. Remove lower leaves as needed, and let most healthy suckers grow unless your support plan or garden conditions give you a reason to limit them.

Optional approach for stake-and-weave support

Utah State University Extension’s stake-and-weave guidance says to remove suckers from the bottom three leaves when those suckers are 3 to 4 inches long. This is a support-specific production method, not a universal rule for all determinate tomatoes. If you use this approach, keep the pruning limited to the described lower growth.

How to remove a small sucker

Small suckers can be pinched or snapped off by hand. Illinois Extension cautions against using a knife because it may spread disease. You do not need a hand pruner for small shoots.

Choose support before deciding how much to prune

Support and pruning are separate decisions: a cage, stake, or stake-and-weave system holds the plant; it does not automatically mean the plant needs heavy trimming. Extension sources discuss all three options without naming one best system for every garden.

Support option Useful considerations
Cage Consider available space, plant size and vigor, and whether the cage will make harvesting accessible.
Stake Consider how much tying the plant will need and whether you can keep it supported as it grows.
Stake-and-weave This is the support context for Utah State University Extension’s limited lower-sucker-removal guidance; it requires arranging support around the plants as they grow.

Choose based on the plant’s expected size, room in the garden, time available for tying or pruning, and ease of harvesting. Do not prune heavily simply because a plant is staked or caged.

Common pruning mistakes to avoid

  • Removing all suckers: This can remove branches that would otherwise bear fruit.
  • Confusing bottom pruning with sucker pruning: Removing soil-level foliage does not require stripping side shoots higher on the plant.
  • Using one rule for every support system: The Utah lower-sucker method is tied to stake-and-weave support, while Illinois guidance generally favors keeping determinate suckers.
  • Cutting small shoots with a knife: Hand removal is sufficient, and a knife may spread disease.
