The best kitchen recycling bin is the one that fits your available space, holds the materials your household sorts, and is easy to empty and clean. There is no single useful capacity for every kitchen: available formats range from small cabinet-mounted bins to large freestanding recyclers and multi-stream systems with a food-waste caddy. The product information available here supports comparing those formats, but not naming ten verified “best” models or ranking them.
Choose a format before comparing capacity
Start with where the bin will live. Freestanding units are visible and readily accessible; cabinet pull-outs conceal bins but use cupboard space; modular bins let you size each stream separately; and multi-stream units combine recycling with general waste or food scraps. These formats solve different problems, so a larger total capacity does not automatically make one unit a better fit.
Freestanding dual-compartment bins
A dual recycler keeps two waste streams in one footprint. The simplehuman 58L Step Recycler has two compartments, an integrated liner pocket and rim, and manufacturer-listed custom-fit liners. Its product page also makes a 150,000-step durability claim and lists a 10-year warranty; those are manufacturer statements, not independent test results. The page also offers a 90L size, but check the exact model’s dimensions and compartment configuration before choosing it.
Cabinet pull-outs
A pull-out keeps containers behind a cupboard door and brings them forward when needed. IKEA’s HÅLLBAR pull-out solution lists two 3-gallon component bins, removable lids, a bag-retaining ring, and a frame that mounts inside a cabinet. IKEA describes the overall solution as 5 gallons. Because the stated overall and component capacities use different figures, treat the configuration as described by IKEA rather than assuming the component capacities add up to the overall figure. IKEA recommends placing the system near the sink to help reduce spills.

Multi-stream systems with food-waste storage
Joseph Joseph’s Totem Max 60L has two 30L compartments and a separate removable 3L food-waste caddy. Its product page describes replaceable activated-carbon odor filters. This is a sorting system as much as a recycling bin: consider whether you need the caddy and are willing to replace filters periodically.
Modular and built-in bins
Brabantia’s Sort & Go and built-in range covers several formats rather than one model. Its official page lists countertop 3L, compact 6L and 15L, under-counter 12L, and larger 25L and 40L options, as well as pull-out configurations. Select an exact model and confirm its dimensions and installation requirements; the range-level sizes alone are not enough to establish which bin will fit your space.

Measure the space and plan the installation
Measure the spot where the bin will sit before settling on a model. For a freestanding unit, check its full height, width, and depth, including room to open the lid or operate a pedal. For a cabinet pull-out, measure the cabinet’s usable interior and check the frame’s installation requirements, door clearance, and access to the bins. For under-counter or built-in options, use the exact model’s dimensions rather than the name of a product range.
Also consider how the bin moves through your kitchen routine. A pull-out near the sink may make sorting wet packaging easier, while a countertop container may be practical for a small, frequently used stream. A multi-stream unit needs enough accessible space for each compartment to be used without awkward transfers.

Check bags, filters, and cleaning before buying
- Bag fit: Check whether the manufacturer specifies custom-fit liners or whether a bag-retaining ring holds standard bags. Confirm compatibility against the precise model and size.
- Odor-control supplies: Joseph Joseph recommends periodically replacing the Totem Max’s activated-carbon filter. Factor in replacement availability and the recurring task if you plan to use that feature.
