If you want a vacuum without an actively rotating beater bar, check the floorhead—not just the vacuum’s body. A straight-suction or parquet head has no motorized brushroll; a switchable model has a brushroll that can be turned off. The available evidence supports these two buying paths and a few model examples, but does not establish 13 distinct, current models for a reliable ranked list.
What “without a beater bar” means
In this context, “beater bar” usually means a powered rotating brushroll. A vacuum described as suitable for hard floors may still have one, so check how the included head works.
- Straight-suction or parquet head: no motorized brushroll. It relies on suction and head design to collect debris from hard floors.
- Brushroll shutoff: the head contains a brushroll, but a switch or setting lets you stop it for hard-floor cleaning. This is not the same as a vacuum with no brushroll.
Neither design guarantees that a vacuum cannot damage a particular finish. Follow the flooring maker’s care instructions and confirm that the head is appropriate for your surface.
Choose a floorhead for your mix of floors
Mostly hard floors: consider straight suction
A dedicated parquet or hard-floor head avoids powered brush agitation. It can be a sensible choice for homes with extensive wood, tile, or other hard flooring. Miele describes its Guard M1 Parquet XL as ideal for large hard floors. Homes & Gardens reported that both floorheads supplied with the reviewed model lacked a motorized brushroll, and found it effective on hard floors and pet hair; its review also noted limited maneuverability on carpet. Those findings apply to the reviewed package, not every regional variant or future bundle. Homes & Gardens’ February 2026 review listed $599 at Miele USA and £349 at Miele UK when accessed or published; treat both as dated observations, not current offers.

Hard floors plus rugs or carpet: compare switching options
If you vacuum rugs or carpet as well as hard flooring, check whether the floorhead can switch modes and whether the vacuum can clean your carpet effectively. A hard-floor-only head may be awkward on carpet or may not provide the agitation you want. Good Housekeeping describes the reviewed Miele Boost CX1 as having a universal floorhead that transitions between hardwood and carpet with a switch, plus a specialized parquet brush. Its lab notes report that the reviewed variant picked up dry oats from hardwood without pushing them forward. That test result is specific to the tested variant and task; it does not establish performance on every debris type or floor.
Brushroll on/off is a separate option
The RTINGS hardwood-floor guide says the Kenmore Intuition Bagged clears everyday bare-floor debris without pushing it around and has a brushroll on/off switch. It is an example of a switchable design, not a no-brushroll vacuum.

Compare the formats and practical trade-offs
| Choice | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Straight-suction/parquet head | Homes primarily cleaning hard floors | Whether the head is included, how it moves on your flooring, and whether a separate head is available for rugs or carpet. |
| Switchable brushroll | Homes with a mix of hard floors and rugs or carpet | How the brushroll is disabled, how well the model handles your carpet, and whether the switch applies to the supplied head. |
| Corded vacuum | Long cleaning sessions without battery-runtime limits | Cord reach, weight, storage, and whether the cable suits the rooms you clean. BISSELL notes that corded models can provide suction for as long as needed. |
| Cordless vacuum | Convenient movement between rooms or quick cleanups | Runtime in the mode you will use, charging, and the trade-off between mobility and available cleaning time. Runtime varies by mode. |
The format guidance on corded and cordless cleaning comes from BISSELL’s 2026 guide. Do not infer pickup quality from motor wattage or marketing language alone; look for testing that matches the floor and debris you need to clean.
Check fit, handling, and maintenance before buying
- Weight and maneuverability: Consider stairs, storage, furniture, and how easily the head turns. A hard-floor-focused model may be less convenient on carpet.
- Dust handling and filtration: Compare bagged or bagless emptying, dust containment, and filtration features that matter to your household.
- Consumables and accessories: Confirm replacement bags, filters, and parquet heads are available for the exact model and region. Bosch’s 2026 vacuum catalogue lists hard-floor or parquet nozzles as accessories for some vacuums; that does not establish compatibility with every Bosch model.
- Package and warranty: Check the exact model number, included heads, regional warranty, and current price before ordering. Equipment and offers can differ by market.
Good Housekeeping lists the reviewed Boost CX1 variant at 13.8 lb, with a 22 ft cord, 1 L dust cup, and HEPA filter. These are specifications for the variant covered in its hardwood-floor guide, updated September 3, 2026; confirm the current model and package rather than assuming every CX1 listing matches.

A practical checklist for comparing models
- Find the exact model and regional variant—not just the product family name.
- Read the floorhead description: determine whether it has no motorized brushroll or has a brushroll shutoff.
- Confirm which heads come in the box and whether they suit every surface you plan to clean.
- For mixed flooring, check carpet performance and whether changing modes requires a switch, a head change, or both.
- Compare cord reach or mode-specific cordless runtime, then weigh those against the rooms and cleaning sessions involved.
- Check weight, debris pickup evidence, emptying method, filtration, replacement consumables, warranty, and current local price.
- If your flooring has a delicate finish, follow its care guidance and verify the head is approved for that surface; no design makes a universal scratch-proof guarantee.
Which kind should you choose?
For a home dominated by hard flooring, start with a canister or other model supplied with a straight-suction/parquet head. For mixed floors, compare switchable models and any included hard-floor tool, while checking carpet performance. In either case, judge the actual head, controls, and regional package—not a “hard-floor” label alone.
