You can build a fun backyard obstacle course with a clear, level route and a few stable, low household items. Keep DIY stations at ground level: mark a path, step over soft objects, weave around markers, crawl through a wide passage, and finish with a short shuttle or target toss. Elevated playground equipment brings a different fall risk and requires equipment-appropriate protective surfacing—not just a lawn.
Plan a simple, ground-level course
Choose a short loop that is visible to the supervising adult and far from roads and driveways. Leave enough room between stations to stop, turn, and avoid collisions. Start with a few activities, then rearrange or repeat them to suit the space and the children taking part.
- Walk a line: Follow a flat line on the ground, heel to toe if that is comfortable.
- Step over low obstacles: Place a few soft, low objects along the route. Step over them rather than jumping from a height.
- Weave around markers: Set out spaced cones or other stable, low-profile markers and walk or run around them.
- Crawl through a passage: Use a wide, stable table-like passage with no sharp or snagging edges. Do not use loose furniture that can shift or tip.
- Move between two points: Add a short shuttle walk or run, with enough room to slow down and turn safely.
- Finish with balance or a target toss: Choose a simple ground-level activity that gives children a chance to pause before they leave the course.
These are adaptable activity ideas, not a prescribed or tested course design. Avoid improvised platforms, climbing on furniture, jumping from heights, or tying cords between objects.
Gather materials and prepare the route
- Use household items that are clean, stable, and free of sharp edges or protruding hardware. Avoid glass and heavy objects that could tip.
- Optional agility cones or other low-profile markers make a weave or start-and-finish path easier to see; they are convenient, not required.
- Choose level ground. Remove rocks, roots, branches, holes, and other trip hazards, and check for wet or slippery patches.
- Set up the course where an adult can see the whole route. Keep stations spaced so children do not collide when stopping or turning.
- In warm weather, have water and a shaded rest spot available.
Adapt the course to the people using it
- For younger children: Keep stations simple, close together, and at ground level, with direct adult supervision.
- For different abilities: Widen routes, shorten distances, allow extra time, and offer a walk or roll instead of a run. Include a place to rest.
- For older children: Consider repeating a station or changing direction, but keep movement controlled and activities age-appropriate.
A timed round is optional, not necessary. Untimed play makes it easier for participants to move at different speeds without turning the course into a race. Do not allow pushing, shoving, or fighting around the stations.

Check the site and equipment before play
Before each session, check that the course is still stable and clear. Periodically recheck fixed equipment as well. CPSC’s Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ home playground guidance support close supervision and attention to hazards.
- Look for items that have shifted, sharp edges, loose connections, exposed bolts, or open tube ends.
- Check for worn, wet, or slippery surfaces and for loops, dangling cords, or snag points.
- Keep ropes, jump ropes, clotheslines, and pet leashes off play equipment; do not let children play on it in clothing with drawstrings.
- Use suitable footwear and activities matched to children’s ages. For playground equipment, AAP advises against helmets; that is distinct from wheeled activities such as cycling, for which CDC guidance recommends helmets.
Keep elevated equipment separate from a DIY course
A station that creates a fall from height is no longer just a ground-level game. CPSC reports that about 50,000 children visit U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year for injuries on home playground equipment; about 80% of those injuries occur when children fall from play equipment. Those figures concern home playground equipment, not all obstacle courses.

For home playground equipment, CPSC recommends a level site away from roads and driveways, visible to supervising adults and clear of hazards such as overhead wires, low branches, roots, rocks, bricks, and concrete. It advises placing equipment at least six feet from structures or obstacles and providing protective surfacing beneath and at least six feet beyond the equipment perimeter; swings need more space. These are recommendations for playground equipment, not universal clearance rules for ground-level games.
Grass and dirt are not considered protective surfacing for home playground equipment, because wear and environmental factors can reduce their shock-absorbing effectiveness. CPSC says to choose and maintain surfacing according to the equipment’s height and the surface material; thin mats and carpeting are generally inadequate. For loose-fill surfacing, its handbook specifies depth by material and equipment height and calls for ongoing replenishment and redistribution. Consult the handbook and equipment documentation rather than treating a lawn as fall protection.

Follow the manufacturer’s assembly and anchoring instructions for fixed equipment, and inspect its connections. For outdoor play structures, CPSC advises rot- and insect-resistant wood or appropriately treated wood, warns against creosote-treated wood and pesticide-containing coatings, and says not to use lead-containing paint. Use manufacturer-provided or recommended corrosion-resistant hardware, secure bolts, and cover exposed bolt ends and open tube ends. The CPSC handbook addresses outdoor home playground equipment and residential child-care settings; it is not an engineering plan for improvised structures.
Account for sun, heat, and breaks
CDC guidance for early care and education recommends shade when possible and avoiding outdoor activity during the strongest sun on hot days when feasible. Plan breaks for water and sunscreen reapplication, and stay alert to symptoms of heat illness. The CDC’s outdoor play and safety guidance also describes outdoor play as a way for children to move, be active, and support healthy development; it does not quantify a fitness effect for DIY obstacle courses.
