A bamboo skimmer is usually a wire-mesh basket attached to a bamboo handle—not a utensil made entirely of bamboo. It lifts food from hot oil or boiling water while liquid drains through the mesh. To choose one, compare basket size and mesh, handle length, head material, intended use, and care instructions.
What is a bamboo skimmer used for?
Often called a bamboo-handled spider skimmer or spider strainer, this utensil has a small mesh basket on a long handle. It is designed to scoop solid food from hot liquid and let the liquid drain back into the pot. Some mesh skimmers can also remove fat from broth or soup. Food Network’s overview describes these common uses; IMUSA describes its model for frying, draining, and scooping from hot oil, boiling water, or broth.
Product listings mention foods such as dumplings, wontons, shrimp, vegetables, and fried or boiled foods. A fine mesh may support smaller ingredients, but the result depends on the particular basket and the food: not every mesh size will handle every ingredient equally well.
What to compare before buying
- Basket diameter and shape: A basket sized for the food and pot makes lifting manageable. IMUSA lists a 5-inch model. A smaller head may be easier to maneuver in a crowded pot, but that is a practical consideration, not a comparative test result.
- Mesh fineness: Fine mesh is described as useful for delicate dumplings and smaller ingredients. Match the openings to the food you want to lift and the drainage you need.
- Handle length: A longer handle can help keep your hand farther from hot liquid. Tesco’s listing for the KitchenCraft World of Flavours skimmer specifies a 33 cm (13-inch) bamboo handle.
- Head material: A conventional spider skimmer has a wire or stainless-steel mesh basket and a bamboo handle. A silicone-headed utensil is a different kind of skimmer, not a mesh spider.
- Care instructions: Check the instructions for the exact model. The cited IMUSA and KitchenCraft listings specify hand washing.

Which type fits your cooking?
- For lifting fried food or dumplings from hot liquid: Look for a mesh spider with a basket suited to the size of the food. IMUSA specifically describes its mesh model for frying and for scooping foods such as dumplings and wontons.
- For small or delicate ingredients: Consider a fine-mesh basket, such as the one described in the KitchenCraft listing. Check that its size and shape suit the food you actually cook.
- For scooping from a pan without scratching it: A silicone-headed utensil such as Loisa’s is a different option from a mesh skimmer. Its heat-resistance specification applies only to its silicone head.
What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
The available product descriptions establish different materials, dimensions, stated uses, and care directions; they do not establish a universal winner. No controlled head-to-head performance or durability testing, or verified customer-review analysis, is available for these examples. Choose based on your pot, the food you lift, and the manufacturer’s care directions rather than treating a product description as proof of comparative performance.
