For a small patch, remove plants from the surface carefully and contain them so fragments cannot escape; fragments left behind can regrow. For a large or hard-to-reach mat, ask your local extension service or natural-resource agency about options before using biological control or herbicide.
How to identify giant salvinia
Giant salvinia has floating upper fronds and a submerged, finely divided lower frond. Look closely at the white hairs on top of the floating fronds: their branches join at the tips, forming tiny cage- or eggbeater-like shapes. Common salvinia (Salvinia minima) has hairs whose tips do not join. This distinction is useful, but if identification is uncertain, consult a local extension service. USGS species profile
Giant salvinia spreads mainly through vegetative growth. Plants or fragments can hitchhike on boats and equipment or move downstream. Growth can be rapid in favorable conditions: USDA APHIS estimated that mats could double in 7–10 days in its May 2000 pest alert, while Texas A&M AgriLife Extension gives an estimate of 4–10 days under good conditions. These are condition-dependent estimates, not a timetable for every pond. USDA APHIS alert Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
What to do with a small patch
- Keep plants contained. Work from the bank when practical, and avoid pushing or carrying loose plants into other water.
- Lift plants from the surface. Raking or seining can remove a limited patch. A pond weed rake can help gather floating material, but it is a removal tool—not a guarantee of eradication.
- Collect and dispose of the material securely. Keep fragments out of the pond, drains, and other waterways. Do not shred the plants; fragments with buds can form new plants.
- Check the water again. Remaining fragments can re-establish, so inspect the pond and repeat careful collection if needed.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension identifies raking and seining as physical control options and cautions that giant salvinia can re-establish from fragments left behind. USDA Agricultural Research Service likewise notes that physical removal can work at small scale but may be expensive, and that mechanical shredding is ineffective because fragments can grow into new plants. How the control options compare
| Option | Best fit | Main limitation or risk | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raking or seining | Small, accessible surface patches | Labor-intensive; missed fragments may regrow, and careless handling can spread plants. | Contain and dispose of all collected material; inspect for regrowth. |
| Biological control with salvinia weevils | Potential management option for larger infestations, subject to local approval and availability | Local purchase, release, and legal establishment are not established for every location. | Ask local natural-resource authorities whether release is authorized and appropriate. |
| Aquatic herbicide | Site-specific treatment where a labeled product is permitted | Potential effects on non-target aquatic life and oxygen levels as treated plants decompose; water-use restrictions may apply. | Confirm local rules and follow the exact product label, including permitted water uses and application directions. |
When to seek help with biological control or herbicides
Biological control
Salvinia weevils (Cyrtobagous salviniae) feed on the plant and may help manage infestations. USDA Agricultural Research Service reports that programs outside the United States reduced infestations by more than 90% in less than a year in many cases. That reported outcome is not a prediction for a private pond or a particular U.S. site. Ask local authorities before considering a release; whether the weevils are available or authorized depends on location.
Herbicide control
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension lists carfentrazone, copper complexes, diquat, fluridone, flumioxazin, glyphosate, imazamox, and penoxsulam as active ingredients that have been used successfully against salvinia, with ratings based on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aquatic herbicide trials. This list is not a product recommendation: formulations, permitted uses, and application directions differ. Some products act on leaves, others in water, and some require an aquatically registered surfactant.

Read the label for the specific product and confirm it permits use at your site and for your intended water uses. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension states: “Always read the product label for directions and precautions, as the label is the law.” Copper compounds can harm fish above label rates and may be toxic in soft or acidic water even at label rates. When dense treated vegetation dies and decomposes, dissolved oxygen can fall; for heavily infested ponds, extension guidance discusses staged treatment and aeration as possible precautions. Ask your local extension service or a qualified aquatic vegetation professional to help assess site-specific risks.
A 2002 USGS record describes a controlled experiment in replicated two-liter containers lasting 42 days. Untreated plants in that experiment increased wet-weight biomass by 800%. Glyphosate treatments showed efficacy at concentrations as low as 0.45% of the commercial formulation, but complete mortality without regrowth occurred only when glyphosate was combined with Optima in that test. These experimental findings are not homeowner application rates; use the current product label and local expert advice. USGS publication record

Why control and local rules matter
Dense mats can block sunlight and reduce oxygen in the water, affecting aquatic life. Giant salvinia also has federal regulatory significance in the United States: USDA’s National Invasive Species Information Center says federal noxious weed rules make import and interstate transport without a permit illegal. Rules for possession, reporting, and treatment can vary locally, so check with your state or local natural-resource agency. USDA National Invasive Species Information Center
For current distribution information, consult current USGS or state maps and local authorities rather than relying on older range descriptions. Before choosing a control method, establish the plant’s identity, the infestation’s size and accessibility, the pond’s uses, and the rules that apply at your location.
