Washington State University Extension says there is no published evidence that coffee grounds repel or kill them. Slugs and snails are no exception: UC IPM says grounds have not been shown to deter these pests.
Do coffee grounds repel any garden pests?
Washington State University Extension’s guidance on using coffee grounds in gardens and landscapes states: “There is no published evidence that coffee grounds will repel or kill any garden pests.” That means a list of six pests repelled by grounds would overstate what is known.
Slugs and snails are often mentioned as a possible exception, but the University of California Statewide IPM Program says crushed eggshells and coffee grounds have not been shown to deter them. Scattering grounds around plants should not be treated as dependable pest control.
Why the caffeine study is different
Oregon State University Extension reports that a 2% caffeine solution applied to orchid growing media killed 95% of snails. That result concerns a caffeine solution and a specific growing-medium treatment—not used coffee grounds spread around garden plants. It does not establish that grounds repel snails, or that they control six kinds of garden pests.

Can coffee grounds harm plants?
Grounds are not risk-free as a blanket garden amendment. Washington State University Extension reports reduced seed germination and plant growth in some crop and ornamental species, and advises against using grounds where plants are being grown from seed. Avoid applying them indiscriminately, especially over seed beds.
What to use for slug and snail damage instead
First identify the pest and the damage; then choose a control suited to the problem. UC IPM discusses traps, copper barriers, and baits. Its guidance says iron-based products reduce feeding damage. No one method is established as best for every garden, so follow local guidance and the product label.

| Control | How it is used | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Traps | Placed where slugs or snails are active. | Check and maintain them as directed by local guidance; traps are a distinct control approach, not a grounds barrier. |
| Copper barriers | Set as a barrier around protected plants or areas. | Placement matters: use them where they can block access to the plants being protected. |
| Baits, including iron-based products | Applied according to the product label. | UC IPM says iron-based products reduce feeding damage. Confirm that the product is suitable for your garden and region, and follow all label directions. |
UC IPM’s recommendations describe categories of control rather than a guaranteed outcome for every site. The pest, garden layout, and label directions determine which option is appropriate.
