15 Houseplants for Different Window Light Conditions

A window’s direction is only a starting point. Match these 15 houseplants to the light at their actual placement, from dimmer spots to sunny sills.

Choose a houseplant for the light it will receive where it sits—not just for the direction a window faces. Window size, curtains, nearby trees or buildings, overhangs, season, and distance from the glass all change the light reaching a plant. The 15 plants below are useful candidates grouped by exposure, not a ranked list; check the conditions in your home before choosing.

First, judge the light at the plant

Most common houseplants grow and look their best in bright, indirect light. Iowa State University Extension describes this as light bright enough to cast a distinct shadow, but without direct sun rays striking the foliage. Light can fall sharply just a few feet from a window, so a bright room does not necessarily mean every spot in it is bright enough for a plant.

A north-facing window can be a useful starting point for estimating exposure, but it is not a guarantee of low light; likewise, a south-facing window may be shaded by trees, an overhang, or curtains. University of Maryland Extension uses these indoor categories: low, 25–100 foot-candles; medium-bright, 100–500; high, 500–1,000; and direct indoor sunlight, above 1,000 foot-candles. Its direct-sun category also describes four to six hours of sun. These are the extension’s broad categories, not universal thresholds for every plant or home. Maryland’s lighting guide provides its exposure examples and plant lists.

For a rough placement estimate, University of Illinois Extension gives 75 foot-candles as an example of low light and 150 as an example of medium light. Its examples include a north window a few feet away, an east- or west-facing window 3–10 feet away, and a south-facing window 15–20 feet away as low-light positions. Those distances are practical approximations, not fixed limits. A light meter or photographic exposure meter can help measure a spot if you need a more precise estimate. See Illinois Extension’s lighting guidance.

Low-light plants: useful for dimmer spots, not darkness

Low-light plants tolerate less light than many houseplants, but “low light” does not mean no light. A dark corner far from a window may not provide enough usable light for steady growth. Try one of these only where it still receives ambient daylight, and watch how it responds.

ZZ plant

A ZZ plant is one of Maryland Extension’s low-light suggestions. It can suit a spot that receives less light than a sunny windowsill, but it still needs usable ambient light. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension includes ZZ plant among popular plants that can cause irritation or other health concerns for pets; confirm its specific risk for your household before bringing one home.

Snake plant

Maryland Extension also lists snake plant for low-light conditions. It is a candidate for a room with a less-bright window, provided the plant is not left in a lightless position.

Cast iron plant

Cast iron plant appears on Maryland’s low-light list. Consider it for a lower-light window area when other plants that prefer brighter conditions would be a poor match.

Peace lily

Peace lily is another low-light candidate in Maryland Extension’s guide. It is also among the plants Texas A&M flags for possible pet health concerns, so check a plant-specific safety reference if pets share your home.

East- or west-facing windows: medium-bright choices

East- and west-facing windows can suit a range of plants that prefer medium-bright conditions. The actual intensity depends on shade, window size, and distance from the glass, so use the placement rather than the compass direction as your final guide.

Chinese evergreen

Maryland Extension includes Chinese evergreen among its medium-bright east- or west-exposure suggestions. It is a practical option when the window area is bright but does not deliver the stronger light suited to sun-loving plants.

Rubber plant

Rubber plant is another Maryland-listed choice for medium-bright east or west exposure. Place it where it receives meaningful daylight rather than assuming that any spot in a room with a west-facing window will be bright enough.

Dracaena

Maryland Extension lists dracaena for medium-bright east- or west-facing locations. The name covers multiple kinds of plants, so check the specific plant’s needs when selecting a variety.

African violet

African violets can suit east or west light. Maryland Extension advises bright light without direct sunlight for blooming, so avoid a position where strong rays fall directly on the leaves.

Norfolk Island pine

Norfolk Island pine is listed for medium-bright east or west exposure by Maryland Extension. Choose a spot with consistent light at the plant rather than relying on the window’s direction alone.

Anthurium

Maryland Extension names anthurium as a plant for east or west exposure. Check the brightness at its intended location, particularly if the window is shaded or the plant will sit well back from it.

Calathea

Calathea is also listed for east or west windows. Maryland Extension cautions against soggy soil, so the plant’s placement should be paired with careful watering rather than keeping its pot continuously waterlogged.

Maranta, or prayer plant

Maranta is a further east- or west-exposure option in Maryland’s selection guide. As with the other plants in this group, the window direction is only a starting point: judge the light where the leaves will actually sit.

High-light plants: for brighter window areas

Choose high-light candidates when the plant’s location receives substantially more light than a typical lower-light corner. “High light” is not the same as direct sun; check whether rays reach the foliage before choosing a plant that is listed for sunnier conditions.

Jade plant

Maryland Extension includes jade plant among its high-light choices. It is a better candidate for a bright window area than for a dim position several feet away from the glass.

Direct-sun plants: only where indoor sun reaches the leaves

Some plants can suit a sunny window that receives direct indoor sunlight. Maryland Extension’s direct-sun category is above 1,000 foot-candles and is described as four to six hours of direct sunlight. That amount is not guaranteed by a south-facing window: shading, curtains, season, and distance can change what reaches the plant.

Succulents and cacti

Maryland Extension lists succulents and cacti among direct-sun candidates. This is a broad group rather than one species, so check the needs of the specific plant; do not assume every succulent or cactus will suit every sunny windowsill.

What to do if a window does not provide enough light

Supplemental lighting may help when natural light at a plant’s location falls short. Maryland Extension advises that most plants need a dark period and recommends no more than 16 hours of total daily illumination, counting both natural and artificial light. A grow light is therefore an option for a placement that needs extra light, not a reason to keep plants illuminated around the clock.

If you move a plant to a brighter exposure, acclimate it gradually to reduce shock. Maryland Extension also advises avoiding drafts from open windows and doors while acclimating a new plant. Observe the plant’s response at its actual location and adjust the placement when needed. Maryland’s selection guide offers additional advice on choosing plants for home conditions.

Check household safety before choosing

Light suitability is only one part of choosing a houseplant. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension names pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia, peace lily, and ZZ plant as popular plants that can cause irritation or other health concerns for pets. This is a general warning, not a complete toxicity assessment or a severity ranking. Confirm the risk for the exact plant and the animal in your household with a trusted, plant-specific safety reference before buying.
