Want to make a rental feel like home without risking your deposit? Start with portable decor you can take when you move, and check your lease before making changes to walls, fixtures, or finishes. Rugs, lamps, textiles, plants, and movable storage can transform a room without requiring a renovation or a set decorating budget.
1. Check your lease before changing anything permanent
Before painting, applying wallpaper, drilling, or swapping fixtures, read your rental agreement and check local requirements. Ask your landlord or property manager for permission when the lease requires it or the change is unclear. Bunnings also advises renters to check their contract before starting work (Bunnings’ guide to decorating a rental).
For a tight budget, prioritize pieces that move with you. You can spread costs over time, reuse what you already own, and choose upgrades that do not depend on altering the property.
2. Plan art around the walls you have
Arrange a small gallery on the floor first. Try different groupings and spacing before deciding where each piece belongs. Use the hanging method that suits both the item’s weight and the wall surface; removable strips are one option, not a universal solution.

3M Command Australia says its picture-hanging strips are commonly used on smooth, clean surfaces and are not recommended for heavily textured or rough walls, wallpaper, or fabric wall coverings (3M Command Australia’s rental decorating guidance). Follow the specific package instructions, including any surface preparation, weight limits, and removal directions. The manufacturer advises: “Remember: Be sure to pull the tab slowly and straight down, not away from the wall.” Clean removal is not guaranteed on every paint finish or wall condition.
On its Australian page, 3M lists capacities of up to 9 kg for X-Large Picture Hanging Strips, up to 5.4 kg for Narrow Picture Hanging Strips, and up to 3.6 kg for the Jumbo Universal Picture Hanger. These are specifications for those products, not general limits for adhesive hangers; confirm the product packaging and instructions available in your region before relying on them.

3. Layer rugs and textiles
A rug or runner can add color, cover flooring you dislike, or help visually define an area. Cushions, throws, and curtains bring in more texture without changing the room’s fixed finishes. Choose pieces that suit your next home, too, so the spend is easier to reuse after a move. Bunnings and Home Depot both recommend rugs as a way to define or unify a space and cover existing floors (Bunnings; Home Depot). Use a nonslip underlay where appropriate, and check that rugs do not create a trip hazard at doorways or walkways.
4. Use lamps to change the mood
Freestanding side lamps and task lights can make a room more comfortable without changing its wiring. Battery-powered candles, string lights, or battery-operated sconces are other options where their placement is safe and practical. Bunnings and Home Depot suggest these kinds of portable lighting for rental spaces.

Keep electrical work out of a decor project: do not alter hardwired fixtures yourself. If a fixed fitting needs changing, check the lease and arrange permission or qualified help as required.
5. Add plants—or choose faux foliage
Indoor plants bring greenery into a room, while faux foliage offers a low-maintenance alternative. Set pots on a saucer or inside a cache pot to help protect the surface below from water and soil. Consider available light, watering needs, and whether you can safely transport the plant when you move.

6. Divide a studio with furniture
A freestanding screen can give a sleeping or work area more separation without building a wall. A folding divider is easy to reposition or store; an open cube unit can also mark a boundary while allowing light through. Bunnings describes screens for privacy and office separation, and Home Depot notes that a room divider can distinguish areas without constructing a wall.
Choose based on what the space needs: a screen prioritizes visual separation, while open shelving adds storage but offers less privacy. Keep pathways clear and secure any tall furniture against tipping as appropriate.

7. Choose storage that can move with you
Flat-pack cabinets, cube storage, and under-bed containers can make up for limited built-ins without a permanent installation. Measure the space first, including door openings and the route the item must take when you move it in or out. If you want storage to double as a low divider, open cube shelving can separate zones while still passing light.
8. Refresh windows and existing fixtures carefully
Curtains can change a room’s color and feel; use existing rods or approved fittings where possible. If you remove supplied blinds, store them carefully so they can be put back when you leave, as Home Depot advises. For a temporary hardware swap, keep the original parts together and confirm that your lease or landlord permits the change before removing anything.
9. Treat temporary wall coverings as a conditional option
Paste-the-wall wallpaper is one option Bunnings describes as peelable without steaming or scraping. That does not establish that every wallpaper product will come off cleanly, or that it is suitable for every wall finish. Check the lease, the product instructions, and the condition of the surface before applying anything; ask for permission if needed. If protecting the existing finish is the priority, portable decor is the more cautious choice.
