First address the cause of any unpleasant smell: fragrance does not fix moisture, mold, a dirty filter, or a mechanical problem. LG USA Support specifically warns against spraying cleaners or air fresheners directly inside an air conditioner.
What can you safely use to add fragrance?
A filter-mounted fragrance pad is a documented option, but it is an optional scent product, not an air-conditioner cleaner or odor repair. Freudenberg Filter’s Filter Fresh Cool Nights packaging directs users to attach its gel pad to a furnace or air-conditioner filter, check the airflow direction, and orient the gel side as instructed. The packaging also cautions users to avoid skin and eye contact, wash their hands after handling it, and keep it away from children.
Those instructions do not establish that the product fits every air conditioner or filter arrangement. Check your unit and filter instructions before using any add-on, and follow the product label. If compatibility or placement is unclear, skip it rather than improvising.

Why does an air conditioner smell, and what should you do?
A smell can come from a filter, moisture, or another issue inside or around the equipment. The right response depends on the odor and the unit. An air freshener can mask a smell without correcting its cause.

For a stale or musty smell
Check and maintain the filter as your model’s instructions direct. For LG models covered by its support guidance, suggested odor-reduction measures include ventilating, running cooling and then a drying function if the model has one, cleaning washable prefilters, replacing filters designated for replacement, and using available cleaning features. Do not assume another brand or model has the same controls or filter-care schedule.
Moisture or suspected mold needs more than a new filter or fragrance. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says filters may reduce some pollutants but do not solve a mold or moisture problem; address the moisture source and follow equipment and filter manufacturer guidance. For a room air conditioner, GE Appliances also points owners to model-specific instructions when dealing with odors and condensate-pan concerns.

For an odor that persists or seems to come from inside the unit
Do not keep adding fragrance or attempt to clean parts you cannot safely access. Carrier advises consulting a qualified technician for persistent or concerning odors. A technician can investigate whether maintenance or repair is needed.
For a smell that may indicate gas or an electrical problem
Do not try to cover it with fragrance or diagnose it by spraying products into the equipment. Treat a possible gas or electrical issue as a safety concern and contact an appropriate qualified professional.

Why you should never spray freshener into the unit
LG USA Support’s July 27, 2026 guidance for the models it covers says: “Do not spray cleaners or air fresheners directly inside the air conditioner. This can damage the unit or make odors worse.” Follow your own unit’s manual for model-specific care. Separately, the EPA’s antimicrobial-use guidance says products should not be applied to HVAC&R systems unless they include specific directions for HVAC&R use. A general room spray or household cleaner is not a substitute for those directions.

Before buying a scent product
- Identify your air-conditioner model and check its manual for filter type, airflow direction, and permitted accessories.
- Read the fragrance product’s placement and safety instructions; do not assume that a product marketed for HVAC use works with every system.
- If the unit has an odor now, troubleshoot and address its cause before considering fragrance.
- Replace a filter only when needed and with one that matches your unit; washable prefilters and replacement filters are not interchangeable care tasks.
