For washable clothing, lift off the excess slime, treat the residue with white vinegar and liquid laundry detergent, soak in cold water, then wash as the care label allows. Check the fabric first, test cleaning products on a hidden spot, and inspect the garment before drying so heat does not make a remaining mark harder to remove.
Before you start: check the garment and test products
Read the care label to confirm whether the garment can be washed at home. Test vinegar and detergent on an inconspicuous area first, following the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s general textile guidance. Its guidance concerns Silly Putty rather than play slime, but it warns that vinegar can change the color of some dyes: UGA Cooperative Extension product guidance.
If the item is marked dry-clean-only, is delicate, or shows color change during the test, do not proceed with the home treatment. Ask a professional cleaner for advice; the available guidance does not establish a safe, slime-specific method for every fabric or dye.
Remove slime from washable clothing
- Lift away the excess. Use a spoon or blunt knife to gently lift the slime from the fabric. Avoid rubbing or spreading it across a larger area.
- Treat the residue with vinegar. Apply white vinegar to the remaining slime with a clean cloth and leave it for a few minutes. The clothing-cleaning guide recommends vinegar for the residue: Consum’s guide to removing slime from clothing.
- Work in liquid detergent. Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to the spot and gently work it into the fabric.
- Soak and wash. Soak the garment in cold water with detergent, then machine-wash it according to the care label. Do not assume the same cycle or temperature is right for every garment.
- Inspect before drying. Check the treated area after washing. If a mark remains, do not put the garment in the dryer: the clothing guide warns that dryer heat may make remaining slime harder to remove.
If the slime has dried
Gently scrape away what you can with a spoon or other blunt implement, taking care not to damage the fabric. The clothing guide also suggests using an iron to soften dried slime, but its heat advice sits uneasily alongside its warning that dryer heat can make a remaining mark harder to remove. Because that source does not establish a universally safe heat method, skip the iron rather than risk setting or damaging the garment. Check the label and seek professional advice for delicate or dry-clean-only items.

When to stop home treatment
- The care label does not allow home washing.
- A test on a hidden area changes the fabric’s color.
- The garment is delicate, or you are unsure how its fabric or dye will respond.
- A mark remains after washing; keep the garment out of the dryer and get advice before trying another treatment.
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension advises checking care labels and pretesting cleaning agents for colorfastness in its Silly Putty stain guidance. That is useful general textile context, not confirmation that every slime formula responds the same way.
