Get ready before you start
Gather a rubbish bag, laundry basket, cleaning cloths, a surface-appropriate cleaner, and a vacuum if the room has carpet or rugs. You do not need a special product for every surface; choose supplies that are compatible with the materials you are cleaning.
- Pick up rubbish and remove dishes.
- Collect laundry and set aside items that need washing.
- Return misplaced belongings to their proper rooms or put them in one temporary sorting spot.
- Clear accessible surfaces so you can clean them without moving objects back and forth.
Work from the top of the room down
Choose a starting point and move consistently around the room, cleaning one surface at a time. Begin with high ledges or fixtures that need attention, then work down to shelves, furniture, and lower surfaces. Leave items off a surface until it is clean and dry.
This high-to-low order keeps falling dust and soil from landing on areas you have already cleaned. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a high-to-low, systematic approach in its environmental-cleaning procedures for healthcare settings; the sequencing principle is useful at home, but a bedroom does not need healthcare-level disinfection.

Dust and clean high surfaces
Dust ceiling-level fixtures or ledges where appropriate, then continue to shelves and other raised surfaces. Use a damp cloth on hard surfaces to capture dust, and follow the surface maker’s care instructions. Avoid reaching or climbing unsafely; use a stable step stool when needed.
Clean furniture and lower surfaces
Continue around the room across desks, dressers, bedside tables, and other furniture, then finish lower surfaces such as baseboards. Use soap and water or a product suitable for that material, following both the cleaner’s label and the surface manufacturer’s directions.

For electronics, follow the device manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A wipeable cover can make some electronics easier to clean. Do not apply a liquid cleaner directly to a device unless its instructions allow it.
Wash bedding and other fabrics appropriately
Strip bedding and launder it according to its care label. Apply the same approach to washable curtains and other household fabrics: use an appropriate detergent and the warmest water setting the item permits, where applicable, then dry completely. EPA recommends washing household linens as part of routine steps that can help reduce indoor dust.

Finish with the floor
Once dusting and surface cleaning are done, vacuum carpets and rugs, collecting dirt and debris that fell during the work. EPA recommends routine vacuuming of carpets and fabric-covered furniture. If the room has a hard floor, damp-mop it using a method suitable for the flooring material. Cleaning floors last is consistent with CDC’s high-to-low sequence.
Clean routinely; disinfect only when needed
Cleaning and disinfecting are different jobs. CDC says, “In most situations, cleaning alone with soap and water can remove most germs, such as harmful viruses or bacteria, on surfaces.” Routine home cleaning is generally enough; disinfecting is usually unnecessary unless someone is sick or at higher risk.

If disinfection is appropriate, clean visible dirt first, then use a product labeled for the surface and purpose. Follow the label’s contact time, keep the surface wet for that time, ventilate the area, and use any protective equipment the label specifies. Never mix cleaning chemicals, and keep products away from children and pets.

- Carpet or rugs: Vacuum them as part of the final floor pass.
- Hard floors: Damp-mop after dusting and surface cleaning.
- Washable bedding or drapes: Follow the item’s care label and dry fully.
- Electronics: Use only the cleaning method approved by the device maker.
- Allergies or asthma: EPA notes that people with allergies or asthma may need to clean more often or more extensively; individual needs vary.
A reusable microfiber cloth is one option, not a requirement. CDC’s discussion of microfiber concerns healthcare environmental cleaning, and notes that some disinfectants can damage it; check cloth and product care instructions if you use one.
