Front-load
Front-loaders can suit households that want a front-access design and have room for the door to swing open. They are often a good category to investigate when efficiency matters: ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 45% less energy and 50% less water than top-load agitator washers. That is a category-level comparison, not a model-by-model guarantee. Check the exact washer’s certification and label.

Compact
Compact washers are worth considering when a full-size footprint will not fit. Their smaller dimensions can work in tighter laundry areas, but compare capacity and installation requirements as well as the machine’s external measurements.
How to measure and check fit
Compare the exact model’s published dimensions with the opening and the route into the laundry area. Allow for the washer door or lid to open, and for hoses and required clearances behind or beside the machine. ENERGY STAR advises considering the washer’s location and notes that stackable, under-counter, and combination designs are available. Confirm installation requirements with the manufacturer and installer; a nominal cabinet width alone does not establish fit.

- Measure height, width, and depth at the intended location, including trim or obstructions.
- Check door swing or lid clearance and whether a nearby wall, counter, or dryer interferes.
- Account for water hoses, drain connections, and any manufacturer-specified clearance.
- Measure doorways, hallways, stairs, and turns on the delivery path.
- Confirm that the selected model can use the existing hookups or identify what installation changes are needed.
How much capacity do you need?
Think about your usual load size and the bulky items you wash, not just the household headcount. Consumer Reports says its tests found washers with claimed capacity above 4.5 cubic feet can fit a king-size comforter. Treat that as a screening point, not a guarantee: comforters differ, and the guide finding does not confirm that every washer above that figure can handle every load. Check the manufacturer’s load guidance for the exact model and item.

Use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare similar models and estimate annual operating costs, as ENERGY STAR recommends. For ENERGY STAR-listed washers, a higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) indicates better energy efficiency, while a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF) indicates better water efficiency. Compare like with like and check that the specific model is listed.

ENERGY STAR’s current clothes-washer buying guidance, accessed October 5, 2026, says full-sized washers that have earned ENERGY STAR use 14 gallons per load, compared with 20 gallons per load for a standard machine. This is the guidance page’s category-level comparison, not a newly reported 2026 study or a promise about every cycle. The guide also says capable machines start at approximately $600 and compact washers can run approximately $800–$2,000; those are approximate guide ranges, not current offers.
Which features are worth comparing?
Prioritize features that solve a real household problem. Consumer Reports highlights higher spin speeds, automatic dispensers, and extra rinse cycles as useful considerations. Its 2026 guide says its testing did not find that steam cleaning improved washer cleaning ability, so a steam feature alone is not evidence of better cleaning.
