This ranking is for completed buildings, not proposed or unfinished projects, and follows the Council on Vertical Urbanism (formerly CTBUH) architectural-height convention. The listed heights are from its 2026 completed-building ranking.

The ranking and heights are reported by the Council on Vertical Urbanism’s 2026 completed-building list and its building records. The official record name for Merdeka 118 is Menara Merdeka Maybank.
What does “tallest” mean?
A building can have different architectural, tip, and occupied-height measurements. Architectural height runs from the building’s base to its highest architectural feature, including a permanent spire. It excludes antennas and functional technical equipment. Height to tip includes the building’s highest point, while occupied height refers to the highest floor designed for occupancy. The Council on Vertical Urbanism uses architectural height for this ranking, so a building’s position can differ from a list ordered by another measure.

The distinction is substantial for some towers. The Council’s record gives Burj Khalifa an architectural height of 828 m and a highest occupied floor at 585.4 m. Those figures describe different endpoints; the occupied-height figure is not a competing architectural-height ranking.
How are the world’s tallest buildings engineered?
Supertall construction is not just a matter of making a frame taller. A tower must resist lateral forces such as wind, transfer its weight safely into the ground, manage heat and weather at the exterior, and support building operations and occupant safety. These are distinct engineering demands; a height ranking alone does not reveal a tower’s structural system or construction method.

Burj Khalifa: a buttressed core and wind-conscious plan
Burj Khalifa’s official project description identifies a three-wing buttressed-core arrangement around a hexagonal central core. The project page explains: “The central core provides the torsional resistance of the structure while the wings resist the wind shears.” In practical terms, the core resists twisting, while the wings help carry wind-induced shear. The page says the Y-shaped plan also helps reduce wind forces and supports constructability.
The project page reports a 3.7 m-thick reinforced-concrete foundation mat supported by bored reinforced-concrete piles 1.5 m in diameter and 43 m long. Together, the mat and piles transfer the tower’s loads into the ground; these figures describe Burj Khalifa’s foundation, not a general specification for supertall buildings.

Its exterior and spire address different challenges. The façade uses double-layer glass in aluminum frames, with a silver coating intended to limit solar heat gain. The telescopic spire contains more than 4,000 tonnes of structural steel and was jacked upward from inside the tower, according to the same official project page.
What the records establish about the other towers
The Council’s building records provide useful comparisons such as architectural and occupied heights, but the structural details available for these buildings are not equally comprehensive. For Makkah Royal Clock Tower, the record classifies the lower building as reinforced concrete and the upper portion as steel; it reports 494.4 m to the highest occupied floor alongside the 601 m architectural height. These material classifications do not, by themselves, establish the tower’s full structural configuration.

For Menara Merdeka Maybank, Shanghai Tower, Ping An Finance Center, Lotte World Tower, and One World Trade Center, the cited ranking and records substantiate their places and height measurements. They do not provide enough consistent, specific engineering detail here to responsibly assign each one a named damping device, core-and-outrigger arrangement, foundation design, wind-tunnel result, or construction innovation. Those claims require building-specific information from an engineer, architect, developer, or directly relevant technical publication.

Architectural height answers a precise question about how high a building reaches under the ranking convention. It does not explain how the structure handles wind, how its foundation was designed, how the exterior controls heat, or how its systems support occupants. Even the records’ occupied-height figures measure something different from architectural height. A meaningful engineering comparison needs verified, building-specific evidence for each tower rather than assumptions drawn from height or a broad material label.
