You can make a rental patio, balcony, doorstep, or permitted yard greener without planting in the ground. Start by checking your lease and property rules, then get the landlord or property manager’s approval before digging, changing existing landscaping, or attaching anything to the building. For many renters, freestanding containers are the simplest place to begin.
Check what your lease and property rules allow
Before starting a temporary garden, read the lease and any building or community rules. Ask the landlord or property manager before digging, removing plants, installing a bed, fastening planters to a wall, railing, or fence, or changing a shared area. Rules vary by lease and location; do not assume that a raised bed or other in-ground change is permitted. Pueblo County Extension recommends checking with the landlord or leasing agency before making those changes: Gardening in Rental Homes.
Make the request specific: describe the location, the type and size of the planter, whether it will be attached, and how you will manage drainage. Keep written approval and clarify what must be removed or restored when you move. If you plan to remove dead material or alter an existing planted area, photograph its condition first; Washington State University Extension recommends documenting the landscape before making such changes: Gardening in Rental Homes.
Compare temporary landscaping options

Containers are a flexible starting point for renters. Colorado State University Extension notes their portability and suitability for rental homes, while Virginia Tech lists patios, balconies, doorsteps, and windowsills as potential locations for container gardening: Container Gardens and Container Gardening.

Choose containers for the plant and the surface
Size for mature roots
Choose a pot that can accommodate the plant when fully grown, rather than only its current size. Virginia Tech’s container-gardening guidance says most plants need a container at least 6 to 8 inches deep for adequate root growth. That is a general rule from the publication, not a requirement for every species; check the needs of the plant you choose.
Plan for drainage without damaging the property
Containers need a way for excess water to escape. Elevating a pot can help drainage, but runoff may stain a balcony, doorstep, or patio. Use a suitable saucer or protective layer where appropriate, making sure it does not block drainage. Avoid leaving standing water against the building or on a surface where it could cause damage.

Account for wind and weight
Think about whether a pot could tip or shift in wind. Illinois Extension notes that container shape and volume affect wind stability. Wet growing media and large containers can also be heavy: check balcony or rooftop load limits with building management before adding them. Do not guess at a structure’s capacity; seek qualified guidance if the limit is unclear.
Plan the space before buying plants
- Measure usable space. Leave clear walking routes and access to doors, drains, and any required exits.
- Observe the conditions. Note sun and shade, wind exposure, and access to water across the area you plan to use.
- Match plants to the site. Choose species suited to your local climate, available light, season, and container volume. There is no single plant list that fits every location.
- Decide how you will water. Container plants may need frequent watering and fertilizing; Colorado State University Extension identifies both as routine considerations for container gardens.
- Keep the setup movable. Choose containers and supports you can safely lift or move, and avoid attachments unless the property rules permit them.
Washington State University Extension describes narrow containers and vertical growing as possible approaches for apartments and balconies. Use those approaches only where the property permits them and any installation is secure.

Maintain the garden and make move-out straightforward
Check plants regularly for moisture, drainage, and stability, especially during hot or windy periods. Water and fertilize according to the plant’s needs rather than assuming a small garden requires little care. Clear spilled growing media and prevent water from pooling or staining the surface.
Before moving out, remove portable containers and other garden items, clean the area, and complete any restoration agreed with the landlord or property manager. Use the lease and written approval as your guide for changes that are not fully portable.
