Only then decide whether to buy a kit or design a robot yourself. A kit can simplify a first build, but it does not guarantee event compatibility, competitive results, or safe testing.
1. Find a competition before choosing a kit
Look for a local combat-robot event or club and check its current weight classes, construction rules, safety requirements, and inspection process. Rules vary by organizer, so there is no single kit or robot design that is automatically suitable for every event.
The SPARC resource hub links to tournament procedures, match rules, judging guidance, robot construction specifications, and arena-construction best practices. Use these resources as a starting point, then confirm which rules your chosen event actually adopts.
For example, NHRL describes its Opens as 3 lb, 12 lb, and 30 lb classes on its builder resources page. Those are NHRL classes, not a universal list. Choose a class offered by the event you plan to attend, and make sure you can meet its rules and practical requirements.

2. Decide whether a kit or a self-designed build fits your goals
A kit can make a first robot more approachable if you have limited design or fabrication experience. It may help you get a functioning bot assembled while learning how its parts fit together. Designing your own robot gives you more control over the design and fabrication process, but asks you to take on more of that work yourself.
NHRL’s builder resources identify the Havoc Academy Crash Course as a starter kit and online course. NHRL’s starter guide also cautions that kits may cost more than a self-designed bot and may not win tournaments. Treat a kit as a way to learn and get started—not as a performance guarantee.

- BUILD A METAL TRACKED ROBOT: Assemble the stainless-steel chassis, suspension, tracks, sensors and UNO R3 control system into a working robot; ideal for home STEM projects, homeschool lessons, coding clubs and classroom builds
- EXPLORE FIVE INTERACTIVE MODES: Switch between FPV driving, IR remote control, obstacle avoidance, line tracking and auto follow; create patrol routes, black-line courses, maze challenges and navigation experiments
- DRIVE FROM THE ROBOT’S VIEW: The camera and ESP32-WROVER Wi-Fi module stream live FPV video to a compatible phone, while the adjustable servo-mounted camera lets you change the viewing angle during driving and inspection
- START WITH BLOCK CODING, ADVANCE TO ARDUINO IDE: Use the ElegooKit app for visual programming, then modify motor speed, sensor thresholds, servo movement and navigation logic in Arduino IDE as coding skills grow
- COMPLETE NO-SOLDER PROJECT KIT: Includes the UNO R3 controller, metal chassis, tracks, camera, ultrasonic and line-tracking modules, motors, servos, IR remote, 7.4 V battery, tools and illustrated instructions; recommended for ages 10+
Before choosing either path, check whether the resulting design can comply with your target event’s rules. If your goal is to learn the whole design process, a self-designed build may be a better fit; if you want more guidance through a first assembly, a kit may be useful.
A published kit example
A Make/Repeat Robotics kit guide names the FingerTech Viper as a first antweight kit and describes a bent sheet-metal frame, two drive motors with foam wheels, and a polycarbonate wedge. That is a published example, not confirmation of current availability, price, exact retail contents, or compatibility with a particular competition.

3. Design for the rules and inspection
At NHRL, a robot must pass inspection before its first fight. Its 2026 rules list checks that include weapon locks or covers, radio failsafes, functionality, applicable design requirements, and weigh-in. NHRL also says every weapon module intended for an event must be inspected. Allow time for inspection in your build schedule instead of treating it as a last-minute formality.
NHRL’s 2026 judging appendix requires each robot to have an active weapon capable of harming an opponent. That is an NHRL requirement, not a rule that can be assumed at every competition. Before building a wedge-only or other passive design, check whether the organizer allows it; do not assume it is accepted or prohibited everywhere.

4. Plan safe assembly, charging, and testing
Safety requirements apply before a robot reaches the arena. Follow your event’s current instructions and the manufacturers’ directions for the robot, batteries, tools, and test equipment. If you are new to powered tools or combat-robot systems, work with someone experienced rather than guessing at unfamiliar procedures.
- Keep tests controlled: NHRL’s 2026 rules require weapon and drive testing in a test box, with a stated wheels-up exception for robots that have a separate weapon switch. NHRL also prohibits driving robots around the pits or venue outside the test box.
- Charge with care: NHRL’s rules require attended battery charging and balance leads for lithium-chemistry batteries.
- Use protective equipment: NHRL requires safety glasses and other appropriate personal protective equipment when using power tools.
- Keep people and animals away: NHRL’s beginner guide advises testing far from people and animals and using suitable safety gear. BattleBots likewise warns that building, testing, and fighting robots is dangerous and recommends getting help when you lack the necessary knowledge.
These precautions are not a reason to improvise a weapon test in a home or public space. Use the test area and procedures required by the event you plan to attend.

5. Build toward your first event, not an imagined shortcut
BattleBots’ general robot-building guide recommends starting small at local competitions and gaining experience over time. A television-scale robot is not the default first project. Your more useful first milestone is a robot that meets a real event’s rules, passes inspection, and can be handled and tested safely.
Before committing to a kit or parts, confirm the class and rule set with the organizer. Then choose the build route that matches your experience, tools, time, and learning goals. A first robot is a way to learn the sport’s design and safety practices; tournament success is not guaranteed by buying a particular kit.
