No: sprinkling coffee grounds around your home is not a proven way to repel adult mosquitoes or prevent bites. Laboratory studies have found effects on some mosquito eggs or larvae under specific conditions, but that is different from showing that grounds outdoors keep mosquitoes away from people. For practical control, remove standing water and use locally approved bite protection as directed.
Do coffee grounds around the house repel mosquitoes?
There is no established evidence that scattering coffee grounds around a home keeps adult mosquitoes away. In a March 6, 2025 response to a question specifically about sprinkling grounds around a house, Michigan State University Extension expert David Lowenstein called it “a home remedy with no evidence of success.” That is expert extension guidance, not a controlled household trial, but it addresses the proposed use directly.
Adding grounds to plant water or soil is not a proven alternative. The Espírito Santo State Health Department in Brazil said in a 2019 notice that applying coffee grounds to plant water and soil does not help combat Aedes aegypti, a dengue-transmitting mosquito, and does not replace recommended care of water-holding containers.
Why laboratory results about larvae do not prove bite protection
Mosquitoes pass through distinct life stages. An effect on eggs or larvae in a laboratory does not show that coffee grounds repel adult mosquitoes, reduce bites in a yard, or protect people. Results also depend on the mosquito species, the material and concentration used, and how long it contacts the insects.

Spent grounds and Aedes aegypti larvae
A 2023 laboratory study exposed Aedes aegypti larvae to wet and dry spent coffee grounds. It reported complete larval mortality after 48 hours at 50 g/L of wet grounds; dry grounds at the same concentration caused substantially less mortality. This was a controlled exposure result, not a test of adult repellency or household use.
Coffee extract and Aedes albopictus eggs
A 2015 laboratory choice experiment found that Aedes albopictus laid far fewer eggs in cups containing high-concentration coffee extract than in water cups: 149 of 4,462 eggs (3.34%) were in the coffee-extract cups, compared with 4,313 (96.66%) in water cups. The study also reported impaired hatching for eggs kept on coffee-impregnated paper. These are results under that experiment’s conditions, not a field effectiveness rate or proof of a dependable home treatment.

A separate test found no larval-killing effect
An indexed 2021 short communication describes used coffee-capsule grounds extracted in hot water and applied at a dose intended for a medium flowerpot tray. Its abstract reports that the method was completely ineffective at killing the tested Aedes larvae. The abstract does not establish a household repellent effect.
What to do instead
Choose a method for the job: removing breeding sites reduces opportunities for mosquitoes to develop, a repellent protects exposed skin, and a suitable net can protect someone while sleeping. These approaches serve different purposes; coffee grounds are not established as an equivalent repellent.

Reduce breeding sites
Follow local public-health advice for water-holding containers. The Espírito Santo State Health Department recommends container-care measures rather than relying on coffee grounds. Empty or manage plant saucers, storage vessels, and other containers where water can collect, using instructions appropriate to your location.
Protect exposed skin
Use a locally authorized mosquito repellent according to its label, including directions about application and reapplication. Formulations, approvals, and guidance vary by market and user. UK 2026 travel-health guidance recommends 50% DEET as its first-choice repellent for relevant travelers; that is travel guidance for its stated context, not a universal recommendation for every person or location.
