The most polished living room curtains do two jobs: they suit the room and work for the window. Start by deciding whether you want to filter daylight, add privacy, reduce light, or simply frame the view; then choose the fabric, color, heading, length, and fit that support that use.
12 living room curtain ideas
1. Choose soft linen in a color related to the walls
Linen and linen-look curtains add visible texture without making the window the room’s only focal point. Pick a shade that relates to the wall color or another existing tone so the panels feel integrated. Linen can suit a range of decorating styles, as Pottery Barn’s living-room curtain guide notes.
2. Use sheers to keep daylight in the room
Sheer panels soften incoming daylight and preserve a bright, airy feel. They provide limited privacy, however, so they may not be enough on their own if the room is overlooked or you need more control after dark. For more on balancing light and privacy, see Homes & Gardens’ guide to choosing living room curtains.
3. Layer sheers with opaque curtains
Pair a sheer layer with a heavier curtain so you can adjust the room to the time of day: leave the sheer closed for softened daylight, then draw the outer panels when you want more privacy or light control. The combination also adds depth at the window. Interior designer Mohamed Alqari describes the sheer layer as a way to maintain openness while diffusing daylight when closed, in Livingetc’s curtain-hanging advice.

Before deciding, weigh the fabric, light control, privacy, color, heading, and fit together. A curtain that looks right in a picture may not meet the room’s needs if it is too sheer for the required privacy, too heavy for the daylight you want, or too narrow to close. Ready-made curtains can suit standard openings; unusual dimensions may call for custom work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose curtains for a living room
- Set the main job. Decide whether the curtains should filter daylight, provide privacy, reduce incoming light, or mainly frame the window.
- Choose the light and privacy balance. Sheers and light-filtering fabrics keep the room brighter but offer less privacy; heavier or blackout-lined options give more light control. Layering lets you adjust between the two.
- Match the room’s visual balance. Use a quieter curtain when furnishings already carry strong color or pattern, or choose a print when the window should become a focal point.
- Check how the curtains will operate. Consider the heading and whether the panels will move. If they must close, ensure the width covers the window.
- Measure the opening and inspect the surroundings. Account for furniture, walkways, and the floor when choosing length. If a standard size will not fit an oversized window, consider custom curtains.
Should living room curtains touch the floor?
Full-length curtains are a common option, but floor-length is not a rule for every room. Check the floor, nearby furniture, and paths through the room before choosing where the hem should fall. The right length is the one that suits both the window and the way the room is used.
