Hydrogen peroxide has a few specific uses in growing and sanitation, but it is not a general plant tonic or a dependable cure for root rot. The clearest applications are a narrowly defined spinach seed-priming method and disinfecting empty hydroponic equipment. A soil drench for fungus gnats is less certain, and the remaining uses below are about cleaning—not treating living plants.
1. Prime spinach seeds using the documented method
For greenhouse spinach production, the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes soaking seeds in a 0.3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 18 hours, then transferring them to rockwool germination slabs that have been soaked in water. Its guide says these priming approaches can increase spinach germination, but results depend on the cultivar and seed coating. This is a spinach-specific procedure, not a general recipe for other seeds. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension
2. Consider a fungus-gnat drench only with caution
Extension advice is not uniform on hydrogen peroxide as a fungus-gnat treatment. Cornell Cooperative Extension gives a soil drench made from one part 3% hydrogen peroxide and four parts water, followed by letting the soil dry. An Ask Extension expert gives the same dilution but recommends trying less severe controls first and says not to use it on seedlings. A Minnesota Extension expert said they had not found research supporting the insecticide claim outside hydroponics. Treat the drench as an uncertain option, not a proven or routine control. Try these fungus-gnat controls first
- Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings when the plant can tolerate it; persistently wet soil encourages breeding.
- Use yellow sticky traps to catch adult flies.
- Consider a labeled Bti product for larvae in the growing medium.
- Use clean pots and media, or repot if the infestation or potting mix warrants it.
These measures target different parts of the problem: traps catch adults, while Bti products target larvae. Cornell also advises letting soil dry after its peroxide drench. University of Minnesota Extension

- FOOD GRADE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE - Compared with technical grade peroxide, food grade peroxide contains NO chemical stabilizers or additives.
- READY TO USE - 3% Formula is an ideal concentration for general use and cleaning
- VERSATILE - This powerful oxidant is ideal for many home and garden uses including laundry, fabric cleaning, surface cleaning, stain removal, cleaning produce, countertops, appliances, and more! Also appropriate for a variety of commercial and industrial purposes.
- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY - No risk of pollution or residues, hydrogen peroxide simply degrades to pure water and oxygen. Helps you maintain a home free of volatile or noxious cleaning chemicals.
- 1 Gallon (128 FL OZ) Total in HDPE Jug with Vented Seal. Proudly made in the USA.
3. Disinfect an empty hydroponic system between crops
A NASA technical-report abstract reports that 0.5% hydrogen peroxide was effective for disinfecting hydroponic plant-growth systems. The report describes rinsing or using a catalyst to remove residual peroxide; microbial populations returned to pre-disinfection levels two days after treatment. This is evidence for sanitizing equipment, not for routinely adding peroxide to a live crop’s nutrient solution. In the study, the nutrient-solution treatment described by NASA harmed lettuce germination and growth. Follow the current directions for a product intended for hydroponic systems. 4. Clean reusable pots, trays, and tools between uses
Cleaning growing equipment between crops helps establish a sanitary starting point. Minnesota Extension recommends clean materials and cleaning or sanitizing trays, pots, and tools between uses. That guidance does not make household 3% peroxide a universal cleaner: select a product labeled for the surface and intended use, and follow its contact-time and rinse directions. Keep equipment cleaning separate from living roots and nutrient water. University of Minnesota Extension

5. Prevent microgreen mold with clean conditions
For microgreens, Michigan State University Extension emphasizes clean containers, clean growing media, and adequate airflow to reduce mold. Its expert exchange does not establish that spraying 3% hydrogen peroxide directly on germinating seeds is generally safe or effective. Do not improvise a seed-spray treatment; if a peroxide product is used for sanitation, use it only as its label permits and wash greens thoroughly before eating. Michigan State University Extension
6. Choose peroxide sanitizers by their label and intended use
For hydroponic or food-contact sanitation, use a hydrogen-peroxide-based product only when its label permits the intended system or surface. Minnesota Extension specifies that hydroponic sanitizers should indicate safety for food-contact surfaces; Colorado Extension refers to peroxide-based products intended for hydroponic systems and directs growers to follow the label. These are sanitation choices, not directions to apply peroxide directly to plants or invent a concentration. University of Minnesota Extension · Colorado State University Extension

- Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner - 3% Hydrogen Peroxide can cleans surfaces in your kitchen or bathroom. It's great for appliances like microwaves and refrigerators. Safer than using 35% hydrogen peroxide.
- Whitening -Add 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to a load of laundry to boost the oxygen whitening power, mix with baking soda as a great whitener, or scrub tile and ground to get out stubborn stains.
- Safe All-Purpose 3 percent hydrogen peroxide essential cleaner - An accelerated h2o2 concentration great for the pool, toilet, or salon. Food grade peroxide to the rescue.
- Washing Vegetables - Safely bulk wash your organic vegetables with liquid 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Just soak them in an h202 concentrate briefly, and rinse off the excess before ingestion.
- Gardening treatment - 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide solution diluted with water to low levels for gardening. Using a bottle, spray them on plants, use in hydroponics bath soak, soil and much more.
Safety: keep treatments specific to their purpose
Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing sanitizer and can affect beneficial organisms as well as harmful ones. Do not mix it with other cleaners or use an unverified concentration on foliage, roots, edible crops, or active nutrient solution. For any sanitation application, follow the product label; for the two evidence-specific methods above, keep the concentration, crop, and use exactly within the stated context.

Brown or mushy roots can indicate root rot, but symptoms alone do not identify the pathogen. UNH Extension recommends checking oxygenation and considering a plant diagnostic lab; Colorado State Extension notes that similar symptoms can have different causes and may require a trained diagnostician. In an infected hydroponic system, UNH advises emptying, cleaning, disinfecting, and restarting. Address root-zone oxygen and system sanitation rather than relying on peroxide as a stand-alone treatment. University of New Hampshire Extension · Colorado State University Extension
