A vacuum can make outdoor-furniture upkeep easier by lifting loose, dry debris from cushions and upholstery before you start wet cleaning. Use a suitable attachment, check the care directions for your particular materials, and treat vacuuming as a first step—not a cure for stains or mildew.
What the vacuum step does—and what it does not
Outdoor cushions collect loose dust, crumbs, leaves, and other dry debris. Vacuuming them before washing is a practical maintenance step: POLYWOOD says a dry vacuum can speed up removing loose debris from compatible cushion covers, while BISSELL also places vacuuming before deep cleaning. Neither instruction establishes vacuuming alone as a way to remove established stains, mildew, or embedded grime.
There is no single vacuum model or attachment shown to work best across all outdoor furniture. Choose the tool and cleaning method according to the furniture and fabric maker’s care instructions.
How to vacuum outdoor cushions and furniture
- Check the furniture instructions. See whether cushions should be removed before cleaning. POLYWOOD’s weave-care directions say to remove cushions before cleaning the weave.
- Remove loose debris. Shake or brush cushions first if the care instructions permit it. For compatible POLYWOOD performance-fabric covers, the company says, “Using a dry vacuum will make this process quicker,” in its Fabric Care & Maintenance instructions, updated April 30, 2025.
- Use a suitable vacuum attachment. Work over broad cushion areas with an upholstery attachment. Use a crevice attachment only where the furniture maker allows it. Arhaus recommends designated attachments for occasional outdoor-upholstery vacuuming, and Bernhardt names upholstery and crevice attachments for outdoor fabrics and cushions.
- Pause before adding water. Check the sewn-in label or the manufacturer’s care guidance for the exact fabric and furniture. Instructions vary by material; a method suitable for one cushion or woven surface may not suit another.
- Wet-clean only when appropriate. If the care directions permit washing, follow their specified cleaner, dilution, rinsing, and drying steps. Do not assume vacuuming has removed a stain or mildew.
- Let cleaned cushions dry fully. Follow the manufacturer’s drying directions before putting cushions back into service or storing them.
When you need more than vacuuming
For compatible POLYWOOD performance fabric, the company’s fabric-care instructions specify mixing ¼ cup of mild dish soap with one gallon of warm water, then thoroughly rinsing and air-drying. This is POLYWOOD’s direction for the materials covered by that guide, not a universal recipe for outdoor cushions.

Use brushes and cleaners that suit the surface. Arhaus cautions against hard-bristled brushes on cushions. CLR advises testing a hidden area first and using a soft-bristled brush on woven surfaces and fabric. Check the furniture maker’s directions before applying any cleaner.
Choose the method by material and soil

Do you need a special vacuum?
The cited care guidance supports using suitable vacuum attachments, not buying a particular machine. A dry vacuum is optional in POLYWOOD’s instructions for removing loose debris. If you already have an upholstery tool, it may be useful for this first cleaning step; a crevice tool can help in permitted gaps. The right choice depends on the furniture maker’s directions and the surface you are cleaning.
