For a first project, try potpourri: dry the plant material completely, combine fragrant leaves and petals, then let the blend age before displaying it or sewing it into a sachet.
Choose a project to match your herbs

These project categories are described by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, Purdue Extension, and UF/IFAS Extension. Their materials support the ideas, but not step-by-step construction methods for every project.
Make dry potpourri from garden herbs
Gather fragrant, fully dry materials
Choose dried plant material for its scent, color, and shape. Options described by Nebraska Extension include rose petals, marigold, scented geranium, lavender, mint, evergreen needles, spices, and dried citrus peel. Do not mix in damp material: moisture can lead to mold.
Drying can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on conditions. Nebraska Extension describes air drying and microwaving plant material between paper towels. For leaves, Penn State Extension says a useful sign of dryness is that they are crisp and easy to crumble between your fingers.

Mix and age the blend
For one example formula, UGA recommends 1 quart dried herb leaves, 1 quart dried flowers or flower parts, 1 ounce fixative, and 5–10 drops of essential oil. Mix in a non-metallic container, cover tightly, and store in a cool, dark place. That recipe calls for about two months of seasoning. A related recipe from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests using the blend after four to five weeks; aging time varies by recipe.
Essential oils are concentrated ingredients, not a requirement for a successful herb craft. Health Canada cautions that natural origin does not guarantee safety, notes that some oils can be harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or applied to skin, and does not recommend or approve DIY uses. Keep oils away from children and pets; avoid therapeutic claims or assuming a blend is safe for everyone.

Display or package it
Once seasoned, potpourri can be displayed in an open jar or bowl, or placed in a cloth sachet. Store unused dried ingredients in sealed glass containers in a cool, dry, dark place, away from heat and sunlight. Penn State’s guidance that most dried herbs keep well for up to a year concerns food-storage quality; it is not a guarantee that a craft blend will retain its fragrance for that long.
Turn potpourri into a drawer sachet
A sachet is a small cloth packet of dried herbs or potpourri for scenting drawers and closets. Use a muslin bag if you have one, or cut fabric into circles, add a spoonful or two of potpourri, gather the fabric, and tie it with ribbon. Nebraska Extension also notes sewn sachets as an option.

Keep sachets away from children and pets. Potpourri is not for eating: MedlinePlus lists eye irritation, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and vomiting among possible symptoms if sachet contents are swallowed; contact poison control after an actual exposure. For group activities, UF/IFAS advises that essential oil should not touch skin directly, potpourri should not be ingested, and anyone likely to mouth craft items should be closely supervised or offered another activity.

Wreaths, garlands, and tussie-mussies
UGA identifies wreaths and tussie-mussies as ways to combine herbs with other garden materials; Purdue also lists wreaths among decorative uses for preserved plants. These are useful directions to explore with dried garden material, but the cited sources do not establish a specific binding method or recipe.

Pressed pictures and botanical displays
Purdue names pressed pictures and wall hangings as uses for preserved plant material. UF/IFAS also describes arrangements, baskets, plaques, shadow boxes, greeting cards, and gift-box decoration. Keep finished dried-flower work out of direct sunlight: bright or sunny rooms can make dried flowers fade quickly.
Herbal pillows and hot pads
UGA lists herbal pillows and hot pads as possible herb crafts. Its guidance does not specify safe fillings, construction dimensions, or instructions for heating a hot pad, so treat these as project ideas rather than a ready-to-follow heated-pad recipe.

Store dried materials with care
- Wait until leaves and other plant parts are fully dry before sealing or mixing them; trapped moisture can encourage mold.
- Keep dried ingredients in sealed glass containers in a cool, dry, dark place, away from sinks, stoves, windowsills, heat, and sunlight.
- Penn State describes an insect-control option for air-dried herbs and seeds: freeze at 0°F (-17°C) or lower for at least 48 hours, or heat at 160°F (71°C) for 30 minutes. Heating reduces flavor and is unsuitable for seeds intended for planting.
