Use the 20 options below to narrow your choices, then confirm the exact cultivar and regional suitability before planting.
How to choose blue flowers for your garden
Start with the growing conditions you can provide, not the color name. Iowa State University Extension’s perennial list gives useful approximate heights and light preferences for a Midwestern garden, but it is not a universal planting guide. Check hardiness and local nursery guidance for your area and the cultivar you intend to buy. Iowa State Extension’s blue-flowered perennials
- Match light and moisture: Sun-loving choices include catmint, lavender, and globe thistle; great blue lobelia suits part shade to shade in Iowa State’s list.
- Allow for mature size: Compact Carpathian bellflower is listed at 6–12 inches, while delphinium reaches 36–50 inches in the same list.
- Check the actual flower color: Blue descriptions may encompass blue-lavender, violet, purple-blue, or blue-gray. Confirm the named cultivar rather than assuming a species will produce a particular hue.
- Plan by season: Blue-flowered plants include spring woodland flowers and bulbs, summer perennials, and annuals such as cornflower; planting dates vary by region.
20 blue-flowered plants to consider
These choices include perennials and other garden plants, and many are available in colors beyond blue. Heights and light preferences below are included where Iowa State Extension’s table provides them; they are approximate and should not be treated as universal performance guarantees.
1. Catmint (Nepeta × faassenii)
A sun-loving perennial listed at 12–24 inches, catmint has blue or white flowers in early summer and can bloom for a long period. It is a practical option for a sunny spot where a lower-growing plant is preferred. Iowa State Extension

North Carolina State Extension advises starting seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost, or direct sowing outdoors in fall in mild-winter climates. It prefers full sun to light shade and medium-moisture, well-drained soil. The advice comes from North Carolina guidance; local frost dates and climate affect timing elsewhere. North Carolina State Extension
Cornflower can reseed readily. Deadhead to reduce volunteer seedlings, or leave some seed heads if you want to retain seed for birds and butterflies. North Carolina State Extension
Blue-flowered clematis
Blue-flowered clematis cultivars offer a vine option when you want flowers on a vertical support. Color and growing needs vary by cultivar, so check the individual plant listing rather than treating all clematis as blue or interchangeable. North Carolina State Extension
Can hydrangeas have blue flowers?
Some mophead and lacecap hydrangea cultivars can produce blue flowers under acidic soil conditions, but hydrangeas are not all blue. Soil changes are not a reliable way to make an unspecified hydrangea cultivar blue; select a suitable cultivar and follow regional guidance for its care. UF/IFAS

Willowleaf bluestar: a blue-flowered plant with a longer wait
Willowleaf bluestar (Amsonia tabernaemontana) is another option when you can wait for an established plant. Wisconsin Extension says it grows best in full sun, tolerates partial shade, prefers moist loam, and can tolerate many soils including clay. Once established, it resists drought. Seedlings may take two to three years to flower, according to the University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension’s 2026 revision; cultivars differ in size, flower color, and hardiness. Quick Recap
Regional and cultivar checks before planting
- Use extension recommendations from your own region when available; Iowa, Florida, North Carolina, and Wisconsin guidance reflects different climates and is not one shared planting calendar.
- Check the botanical name and named cultivar on the plant label. Species and hybrids may vary in color, height, hardiness, and other traits.
- Compare the plant’s light and moisture preferences with your actual garden conditions, then allow room for its mature size and any tendency to spread.
- Ask a local nursery or extension service about hardiness and planting timing if the plant is unfamiliar in your area.
