For liquid medicine, use the supplied oral dosing device or ask a pharmacist for one; for other liquids, use a graduated pipette or a small graduated cylinder. A kitchen teaspoon is not a reliable way to measure a medicine dose.
Choose a measuring tool for the liquid
| Tool | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Oral dosing syringe marked in mL | Small oral medicine doses | Choose markings in the same units as the medicine label. FDA-hosted guidance from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs generally prefers oral syringes for medicine volumes up to 10 mL. NCPDP Resource Document, version 2.0 |
| Graduated pipette | Small non-medication volumes | Make sure the scale clearly marks 1 mL and the pipette is suitable for the liquid and task. FDA guidance recognizes volumetric glassware but does not assess particular consumer pipette models. FDA guidance |
| Small graduated cylinder | General liquid measurement | Use a vessel small enough to read the 1 mL mark clearly. For clear liquids in glassware, read the meniscus at eye level. |
| Household teaspoon or tablespoon | Rough household conversion only | Not a precise measuring tool, and not appropriate for administering medicine. Kitchen spoons vary in size and shape. NCPDP Resource Document, version 2.0; CDC Medication Safety Resources |
Measuring 1 mL of medicine
- Check the medicine label for the prescribed amount and unit.
- Use the supplied oral syringe or dosing device with mL markings. Draw up the dose to the 1 mL mark, following the device’s instructions.
- If no device was supplied, or its markings are hard to read, ask a pharmacist for an appropriate one.
Do not alter or convert a prescribed dose based on a household-measure approximation. CDC advises using the dosing device supplied with liquid medicine and asking a pharmacist if one is unavailable. CDC Medication Safety Resources
Measuring 1 mL of another liquid
Use a graduated pipette or small graduated cylinder with a legible 1 mL mark. Match the instrument’s capacity and scale to the task; the exact accuracy of a particular consumer instrument depends on that instrument and is not established by the cited guidance.
Read a clear liquid in glassware
Set the vessel on a level surface and bring your eyes to the height of the liquid. Read the lowest point of the curved meniscus against the graduation, looking straight across rather than from above or below. FDA guidance recommends choosing the smallest glassware that holds the target volume to make the measurement easier to read. FDA guidance

What the teaspoon conversion does—and does not—tell you
FDA household-measure guidance gives 1 teaspoon as 5 mL, making 1 mL one-fifth of that standard conversion. The same guidance lists 1 tablespoon as 15 mL, 1 cup as 240 mL, and 1 fluid ounce as 30 mL. These are household-measure equivalents in the guidance’s food-label context, not a recommendation to measure medicine with tableware. FDA guidance, October 1993
Household spoons are not standardized measuring devices. CDC warns against using them to give liquid medicine; its medication-safety material also notes that an average tablespoon holds three times as much medicine as a teaspoon. CDC Medication Safety Resources; CDC Medication Safety Web Buttons
