You can make a handmade iPhone pocket by knitting a close-fitting sleeve to your phone’s measurements or weaving and sewing a pouch from pin-loom squares. The knitting tutorial estimates yarn at about $5–$7, but that is not a verified current $10 total for all materials and tools. Choose a method based on the tools you have, the fabric you want, and the fit you need.
Choose knitting for stretch or weaving for a square-built pouch

The methods come from The Mac Observer’s knitting tutorial and Brooke Ali’s pin-loom tutorial. Neither source establishes that either handmade pouch offers protection equivalent to a commercial phone accessory.
How to knit a phone sleeve to size
Gather materials and measure your phone
Use sport- or fingering-weight yarn; The Mac Observer suggests a cotton or nylon blend and US 3 (3.25 mm) or US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for a relatively close fabric. You will also need a tapestry needle and measuring tape. Measure the width and height of the phone you intend to carry, rather than relying on a generic phone size.
Make a gauge swatch and calculate the cast-on
- Knit a 4-by-4-inch swatch in the stitch pattern you plan to use.
- Measure how many stitches fit in one inch of the swatch. This is your stitches-per-inch gauge.
- Multiply that figure by the phone’s width to estimate the cast-on stitch count. For example, if your gauge is 6 stitches per inch and the phone is 3 inches wide, the calculation gives 18 stitches. This is an arithmetic example, not a guaranteed fit; yarn, stitch pattern, and desired ease affect the result.
Work the body and check its fit
The tutorial suggests 1×1 ribbing, 2×2 ribbing, or seed stitch. It recommends knitting in the round and periodically checking the work against the phone. Knit to approximately the phone’s height, allowing additional length for closing the bottom; check the actual fit before finishing, since the tutorial does not specify a universal amount of extra length.

Close the base and finish
Close the bottom with Kitchener stitch or a three-needle bind-off, following the method appropriate to your construction. The tutorial also mentions a strap, magnetic snap, or embroidery as optional customization. These additions change the materials needed, so include them separately when estimating your own cost.
How to make the pin-loom alternative
Brooke Ali’s tutorial describes weaving ten squares: four for the pouch body and six for the strap. Ali’s stated layout is: “I started off by weaving 10 pin loom squares: 4 for the body where the iPhone goes, and 6 for the strap.” Sew the four body squares into a pouch, then attach the strap squares at the front and back as shown in the tutorial.

This method calls for one ball of worsted-weight acrylic yarn, a pin loom with a six-inch upholstery needle, a pick comb or beater, and a tapestry needle. Because the woven fabric lacks the stretch of ribbed knitting, compare the finished pouch dimensions with the phone before relying on the fit.
