It has 61 sq ft of floor space, 78 in of interior height, and a 40 lb minimum trail weight; REI lists its packaged weight as 45 lb. Its instant-pitch frame pops into place, but anchoring, guying out, positioning, and fitting the rainfly still take work. Although Gazelle markets it for an extended camping season, available product information does not establish a safe temperature range, snow-load limit, or wind-speed rating.
What the Gazelle T4 Overland EXP is—and who it suits
The T4 Overland EXP is a freestanding-style hub tent designed for vehicle-based camping. Its four-person capacity, nearly square floor, and 78 in listed interior height make it more practical for standing, changing, and arranging camp gear than a compact backpacking shelter. The trade-off is substantial weight and a long packed shape: plan to carry it in a vehicle, and check the storage space before buying.
Gazelle lists the model as GT403AG in Agave Green. The manufacturer and REI list a 94 × 94 in floor footprint and 61 sq ft of floor area. Capacity is a rated sleeping count, not a promise that four adults will have generous room for bags or cots; consider your sleeping setup and gear layout before treating it as a comfortable four-person base camp.

Weight labels are not interchangeable. REI’s 40 lb figure is the minimum trail weight, while 45 lb is the packaged weight; use the latter as the more relevant planning figure for transporting the tent with its packed components. The 57 in packed length is also important: measure the vehicle compartment or storage system rather than assuming the bundle will fit because its weight is manageable.

- Extend your camping season—features a mesh roof with zippered panels for use in colder weather
- Constructed from a 210 denier Ripstop fabric for lasting durability
- Features Foundation Feet for extra stability when staking out the tent
- Compact 57” pack length allows you to fit in the backseat or trunk of most cars
- Includes one cord port for convenient electrical cord access
Gazelle says the frame is fiberglass and pops into place without assembly. Listed tent features include a removable floor and rainfly, two D-shaped mesh doors, a mesh roof with zippered panels, two closable vents, a power-cord port, a removable gear loft, and eight gear pockets. The vents are described for heater, AC-unit, or wire access; that feature does not itself establish that using a particular heater or appliance inside is safe. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions and observe ventilation and carbon-monoxide precautions.
Fabric ratings
- Shell and rainfly: 210-denier ripstop polyester, rated 2000 mm hydrostatic head (HH), with a UV50+ rating.
- Floor: 300-denier Oxford polyester, rated 5000 mm HH.
- Included footprint: 300-denier material, rated 3000 mm HH.
Hydrostatic-head figures describe water-resistance ratings for fabric; they are not wind, snow, or whole-tent storm ratings. Gazelle’s product page provides no tested wind-speed threshold, certified snow-load limit, or operating temperature range for the EXP.
Rank #2
- Fits four people with plenty of room for additional gear
- Includes a 300 denier Oxford weave polyester footprint with a separate storage bag and additional stakes
- Upgraded All-Terrain Stakes and reflective guy lines
- Includes an oversized water-resistant duffle bag with a covered zipper and taped seams
- 78” tall allowing you to move around freely
What comes with it
Gazelle lists a footprint with storage bag and tack-down stakes, upgraded all-terrain stakes, reflective guy lines, and an oversized water-resistant duffle. The duffle has a covered zipper, taped seams, an external stake pouch, and extra handles. The footprint and stakes are listed inclusions, not required add-on purchases.
What “instant pitch” means in practice
The hub frame is designed to pop into place without assembling separate pole sections. That speeds the initial shelter setup, but does not eliminate the steps that keep a tent positioned and secured. Gazelle says the EXP’s Foundation Feet are designed to be staked through at each corner to improve rigidity and wind resistance.
Rank #3
- Has space to sleep 4-8 people with plenty of room for additional gear
- Includes a 300 denier Oxford weave polyester footprint with a separate storage bag and additional stakes
- Upgraded All-Terrain Stakes and reflective guy-lines
- Includes an oversized water-resistant duffle bag with a covered zipper and taped seams
- Convertible screen room for additional leisure or sleeping area
- Choose a level site with enough clearance for the 94 × 94 in footprint, doors, and guy lines.
- Open and extend the hub frame according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then orient the doors for your intended access.
- Secure each Foundation Foot through its stake-through point, and install the supplied guy lines and stakes as appropriate to the site.
- Fit and secure the rainfly when conditions call for it, then check that doors, vents, and the cord port are arranged as intended.
Allow time for anchoring and the rainfly rather than treating the instant-pitch description as a complete setup-time promise. Ground conditions matter: bring suitable stakes for the surface and use secure anchors where ordinary stakes cannot hold.
How much weather protection does it establish?
The fabric ratings, closable vents, rainfly, and included footprint are useful specifications for evaluating rain protection and ventilation. They do not establish how the assembled tent performs in severe wind, heavy snow, or a particular temperature. REI’s 3–4-season classification and Gazelle’s extended-season marketing are broad product descriptions, not quantified operating limits.
Rank #4
- Has space to sleep 4-8 people with plenty of room for additional gear
- Convertible screen room for additional leisure or sleeping area
- 78” tall allowing you to move around freely
- Hub design makes assembly fast and easy
- Two removable gear lofts, five gear pockets, and six wall mounted pouches, plus a removable floor and rainfly
A 2022 Overland Expo review by Nick Jaynes covered the earlier T4 Overland Edition, not the EXP. The reviewer described rapid setup, reported that the older tent collapsed in a moderate breeze when unstaked, and raised concerns about its security in high winds. That is a useful reminder to stake and guy a hub tent; it is not a measured wind test or evidence of the GT403AG’s performance.
If your trip could involve strong winds, accumulating snow, or temperatures near or below freezing, do not infer suitability from the “all-season” wording or fabric HH values. Seek current manufacturer guidance for those specific conditions and choose a shelter with documented limits appropriate to the forecast.

EXP versus the earlier T4 Overland Edition
Do not transfer the earlier model’s packed length to the EXP. The 2022 Overland Expo review reported approximately 67.5–68 in for the prior T4 Overland Edition. Gazelle and REI list the EXP at 57 in long when packed, so vehicle fit should be checked against the EXP figure rather than the predecessor’s longer measurement.
The older review also discussed D-shaped door access and rainfly handling in a storm. The EXP retains D-shaped doors, according to Gazelle, but those predecessor-specific hands-on observations do not establish how the EXP behaves. If you use cots or bulky gear, sketch the door and sleeping layout before committing to a configuration.
Buying and comparison checks
When comparing the T4 Overland EXP with another vehicle-camping tent, compare like with like rather than relying on season labels alone.
- Room: Compare rated capacity alongside floor area and interior height; account for cots and personal gear.
- Transport: Compare packed length and packaged weight, not only minimum trail weight.
- Setup: Include staking, guy lines, and rainfly work in the setup comparison.
- Weather evidence: Separate fabric water-resistance ratings from documented wind, snow, or temperature limits.
- Camp features: Check ventilation, cord access, removable components, and storage pockets against your use.
- Included gear: Confirm whether a footprint, stakes, guy lines, and carry bag are included before buying extras.
