It entered production in 1969, worked for more than two decades, and moved over 483 million cubic yards of rock and earth, according to AEP. The machine was dismantled in 1999; its enormous bucket survives at Miners’ Memorial Park in McConnelsville.
What was Big Muskie?
Big Muskie was a giant walking dragline: a machine that used a bucket suspended from a long boom to remove the soil and rock covering coal seams. Rather than traveling on wheels or tracks, it moved by shifting its weight on large walking mechanisms. The 4250-W was built by Bucyrus-Erie for Central Ohio Coal Company’s surface-mining operation in southeastern Ohio.
Its scale was selected to suit the mine, not simply to set a size record. In a 1969 technical paper, Melvin W. Kraschnewski wrote that the company considered annual coal output requirements, the depth of the overburden, and the terrain when it chose the machine. Caterpillar’s historical account adds that the company considered dragline work more profitable than shovel use for the property’s overburden and terrain, and that the machine supported reclamation plans (Caterpillar; 1969 SME technical paper).
How big was Big Muskie?
Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ 2001 publication lists Big Muskie at 13,500 tons, 222 feet high, with a 220-cubic-yard bucket and a 310-foot boom. Caterpillar describes it as over 27 million pounds—nearly 22 stories high—with a 220-cubic-yard bucket and a 330-foot twin boom. The published boom lengths differ, so neither measurement should be treated as an uncontested figure.

How was Big Muskie built and moved to Ohio?
The contract between Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie was signed in 1966, according to Kraschnewski’s 1969 technical paper. Caterpillar says engineering and construction of the components also began in 1966. Shipping and assembly were major undertakings: Caterpillar reports that components arrived on 340 rail cars and 260 trucks, and that assembly required 200,000 man-hours.

What did Big Muskie accomplish?
AEP reported in 1999 that Big Muskie moved more than 483 million cubic yards of rock and earth during its 1969–1991 operating span. That is a cumulative total across the machine’s operating years. Separately, Caterpillar says that in 1976 it removed “8,000 yards of overburden … per operating hour.” The latter is an hourly operating figure for that year; Caterpillar does not specify cubic yards in that sentence, so it should not be silently expanded to a daily or lifetime rate.

The scale of the machine reflects the demands of removing overburden across a large surface mine. It was built around the mine’s production needs, geology, and terrain, and the technical and historical accounts describe it as the world’s largest walking dragline. That description concerns its type of machine; the available figures do not establish a current ranking of operating draglines.

The documented timeline is that Big Muskie became idle in 1991 and was dismantled for scrap in 1999. The cited accounts do not establish one definitive reason for the shutdown, so attributing it to a specific cause such as regulation, costs, or depleted reserves would go beyond what they document.

The 220-cubic-yard bucket was saved and turned into a monument honoring the people who worked in southeastern Ohio’s mines. It is displayed at Miners’ Memorial Park in McConnelsville, Ohio; Caterpillar describes the display as covering Big Muskie, surface mining, and reclamation. Ohio Cooperative Living also reported the bucket’s location at the park in 2024. Current opening hours and visitor access are not established by these sources, so check locally before planning a visit (Caterpillar; AEP; Ohio Cooperative Living).
