Customers could scan a code with the Amazon app to reach craft instructions and videos, including a cutout dinosaur project. The campaign was selective, not a feature on every box, and the available sources do not confirm that SmileCodes are still in use.
What were Amazon SmileCodes?
SmileCodes were Amazon-associated, QR-style codes with the company’s smile mark in the center. Scanning one with the Amazon app could open digital content; the destination depended on the code and could include videos or product pages. TechCrunch described Amazon testing the codes in European pop-up shops and Amazon Lockers before a U.S. magazine debut expected in February 2018. TechCrunch reported on the codes on January 30, 2018.
How the box craft campaign worked
In May 2018, Amazon placed SmileCodes on some shipping boxes. Customers could use the Amazon app to scan a code and access project instructions and videos. GeekWire reported that Amazon planned eight videos and projects for selected customers around the country; it did not describe a rollout to every customer or every package. Examples included a cutout dinosaur craft and a 360-degree video depicting a whimsical galaxy. GeekWire’s May 15, 2018 report and Retail Dive’s May 14, 2018 report covered the campaign.
SmileCodes and Amazon’s later Halloween box activity
Amazon described another interactive box activity in October 2020, but it was a separate experience—not evidence that SmileCodes continued. For that Halloween activity, a customer drew a face on a pumpkin design on the box, then used a QR code and Amazon AR Player app to view the pumpkin in augmented reality. Amazon called it the app’s first available experience. Amazon’s October 14, 2020 description explains how it worked.

Can you scan a SmileCode on an Amazon box now?
The available reporting documents the box campaign in 2018, but does not establish whether SmileCodes are printed on packages today. Amazon’s current packaging-reuse guidance encourages cardboard crafts, but does not say the codes remain in use. If you find an old code, its destination may depend on whether the linked experience is still available; the sources do not establish that the 2018 videos or instructions remain online.
What can you make from an Amazon box?
Amazon’s packaging-reuse guidance suggests using cardboard boxes and paper filler as craft materials. A box can be cut and repurposed for a simple project such as a cardboard dinosaur, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a particular design or require any special tool. Scissors or basic cardboard craft tools are optional; choose tools appropriate to the maker’s age and ability. Amazon’s box-reuse guidance, published December 15, 2022 and updated July 14, 2025, covers crafts alongside other ways to reuse packaging.

That is Amazon’s reported comparison for Amazon Day, not a measured result of SmileCodes. The packaging guidance does not provide a quantified environmental outcome for the SmileCodes campaign.
