University of Surrey researchers demonstrated that a specific cyanobacterium can keep photosynthesizing inside a water-based polymer coating after it is dried and rehydrated. In laboratory experiments, the coating evolved oxygen and captured carbon dioxide. That is promising materials research—not evidence that a painted room will gain meaningful oxygen, clean its air, or remove carbon at building scale.
What “green living paint” is
The University of Surrey’s Green Living Paint is a research biocoating: a polymer film containing living cyanobacteria immobilized within it. The study tested the desiccation-resistant extremophile Chroococcidiopsis cubana PCC 7433. The material could be dried and later rehydrated while the bacteria remained capable of photosynthesis in the coating.
The term “paint” can suggest a ready-made architectural finish, but the reported work concerns an experimental coating formulation. The researchers did not establish that ordinary paint can be turned into a working biocoating simply by adding algae or bacteria.
What the experiments found
After rehydration, the researchers measured oxygen evolution and carbon capture in laboratory experiments. The reported maximum oxygen-production rate was up to 0.4 grams of oxygen per gram of biomass per day, measured by University of Surrey researchers in experimental coatings in 2023. It is normalized to biomass—not to wall area, room volume, or building size—so it cannot be converted directly into household oxygen supply or building-scale climate impact. The peer-reviewed study reports the experimental findings.

#1 Best Overall
- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
The team continuously measured oxygen for a month and reported no decline in activity during that observation period. This is evidence of persistence over the experiment, not indefinite operation, a defined outdoor service life, or proven performance on occupied buildings.
Why the organism and formulation matter
The result was not shared by every cyanobacterium tested. The comparison in the study shows distinct outcomes:

| Organism tested | Outcome in the coating study |
|---|---|
| Chroococcidiopsis cubana PCC 7433 | Photosynthesis and oxygen evolution were observed in the coating after drying and rehydration. |
| Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 | No oxygen evolution was observed in the coating. |
| Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 | Non-viable after drying. |
These comparisons make clear that performance depends on the selected organism and coating formulation. They do not support assuming that any cyanobacterium—or algae generally—will survive drying and function when mixed into a conventional wall paint.
What this does—and does not—mean for buildings
Photosynthesis in a lab coating is not the same as demonstrating a useful construction product. The reported oxygen rate is per gram of biomass, and the sources do not establish an output per square metre of wall, performance across a room, or a quantified net removal of atmospheric carbon. They also do not establish indoor-air improvement, consumer-use safety, or net climate benefit after making and maintaining the coating.

The University of Surrey presented extreme-environment uses as possibilities. The paper discusses potential directions including carbon capture, wastewater treatment, and biofuel production. These are research avenues rather than validated building applications. Dr Suzie Hingley-Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Bacteriology at Surrey, said that mechanically robust, ready-to-use biocoatings or “living paints” “could help meet these challenges by reducing water consumption in typically water-intensive bioreactor-based processes.” That statement concerns potential and water use in microorganism processes; it is not a claim of proven building-scale carbon removal or commercial readiness. Surrey’s announcement provides the institutional context and quotation.

The cited sources do not establish that the University of Surrey Green Living Paint is sold to consumers. A separate concept, Cyanoskin, was reported by Imperial College London after winning its 2024 Venture Catalyst Challenge. That report describes photosynthetic paint for building surfaces, but does not establish retail availability; it should not be confused with the Surrey research. Imperial’s 2024 report covers that distinct development.

For now, the evidence supports describing living paint as an emerging research biocoating, not as a consumer-ready construction finish with established performance specifications.
