Several familiar houseplants—especially pothos, some philodendrons, creeping Charlie, English ivy and inch plant—can root readily in water. But rooting a cutting in a jar is not the same as keeping a plant thriving indefinitely without soil. If you want a cutting to become a lasting houseplant, plan to move it into potting mix once its roots are established; ongoing water culture requires nutrients delivered through the water.
Which houseplants root in water?
Water is a practical way to propagate some houseplants from stem cuttings. University of Nevada, Reno Extension names pothos, creeping Charlie and some philodendrons as plants that root well in water. University of Vermont Extension also lists English ivy, pothos and inch plant as easy-to-root vining houseplants.
These are supported examples for rooting cuttings—not proof that every plant on the list will grow well in plain water forever. As UNR Extension puts it in “Propagating Houseplants”, “Not all plants root in water.”
How to root a houseplant cutting in water
- Take a suitable cutting. Choose a healthy stem from a plant known to root in water, such as pothos or English ivy. The extension guidance supports water rooting for selected plants, not every houseplant.
- Set it in a clean jar. Place the cut end in water. A clean household jar is enough; a specialist propagation vase is optional.
- Keep the water fresh. UNR Extension recommends changing propagation water every few days or adding horticultural charcoal. Keep the cutting setup clean.
- Watch for roots, without treating timing as a guarantee. UNR says roots may begin to appear within ten days. That is practical guidance, not a promised schedule; results depend on the cutting and conditions.
- Pot it when roots are established. Iowa State University Extension advises moving cuttings into regular potting soil once adequate roots have formed—approximately one inch or more. Allow the newly potted cutting to adjust after the move.
Water rooting is different from growing permanently in water
A cutting can form roots in a glass of water and still be intended for eventual growth in potting mix. Iowa State Extension’s jar example recommends transplanting rooted cuttings into regular potting soil, so it is guidance for propagation rather than a general endorsement of permanent water culture.

For a plant to keep growing without soil, water has to do more than surround its roots. University of New Hampshire Extension defines hydroponics as growing plants using water instead of soil to deliver essential nutrients; those nutrients are supplied dissolved in the water. That principle does not establish a single fertilizer, concentration, pH or feeding schedule that suits every houseplant.
What about lucky bamboo?
Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is a specific example of a plant that can sit in water with pebbles, according to UNR Extension’s “Four Myths of House Plant Care”. Treat it as an example, not evidence that all plants whose cuttings root in water can be maintained that way indefinitely.
