To make a fake Christmas tree look fuller, shape every branch and tip before decorating. Spread the tips at varied upward and outward angles, working section by section to create overlapping layers and conceal the center pole. Then add lights, ornaments and, if needed, green garland or extra foliage to disguise stubborn gaps.
Shape the tree before decorating
A tree compressed in storage often looks sparse until its branches are opened up. Pottery Barn advises, “Lift and separate the branches and tips to lose that ‘packed away’ look.” Follow the manufacturer’s assembly and shaping instructions, and fluff the tree before adding lights, ribbon or ornaments.
1. Work one section at a time
Start near the trunk and move outward, opening each branch so its tips are visible rather than bunched together. Finish one section before moving to the next; this makes it easier to notice bare spots as you go.
2. Angle tips in different directions
Bend tips upward and outward, varying their angles instead of pointing them all in the same direction. Balsam Hill recommends lifting inner branches in an alternating pattern and bending tips upward and outward. The varied placement creates a layered outline and helps cover the center pole.

3. Check the tree from all sides
Step back periodically and inspect the tree from several angles, including the room’s usual viewing positions. Adjust crowded areas and redirect tips toward visible openings; a tree that looks full from the front may still have gaps at the sides.
Add decorations in the right order
Once the branches are shaped, decorate in layers. Macy’s and Home Depot place lights before garland or ribbon in their decorating sequences.

4. Place lights for depth
Add lights after shaping, working across the tree rather than concentrating them only on the outermost tips. Lights can draw the eye through the branches, but they do not replace missing foliage.
5. Use green faux pine garland in obvious gaps
If shaping leaves a stubborn bare spot, tuck in green faux pine garland to add the appearance of foliage. Bob Vila recommends faux pine garland for sparse areas. Choose a shade and branch scale that blend with the tree, and secure it discreetly so it does not look like a separate strip laid over the branches.

6. Add compatible greenery picks or branch stems
For isolated holes, place artificial greenery picks or faux pine branch stems among the existing branches. Match their color and proportions as closely as possible, then angle them so they follow the tree’s natural silhouette.
7. Layer ribbon as decoration, not foliage
Ribbon can add a substantial visual layer after the lights, and it may soften the look of small openings. It is a styling choice rather than a way to add actual foliage, so avoid relying on it to cover broad bare sections.

8. Distribute ornaments and picks thoughtfully
Mix larger and smaller ornaments and spread them through the tree rather than clustering them in one area. Macy’s decorating sequence also includes ornaments and picks after shaping and lights. Use picks where they help integrate a filler or add detail, not as a substitute for opening the branches.

Garland, greenery stems, ribbon and a tree collar solve different problems. Use foliage-like fillers for branch gaps; use ribbon for a decorative layer; use a collar only when the stand itself needs concealing.

9. Make fillers blend in
Compare the filler’s color, shape and scale with the tree, and consider whether it fits the existing decorating theme. A close visual match is less likely to draw attention to the exact spot being covered. Tuck pieces into the branch structure rather than leaving them visibly perched on the surface.
10. Cover the stand separately
A tree collar can give the base a tidier appearance by hiding the stand. It addresses the bottom of the display, not the fullness of the branches, so treat it as a separate finishing touch.
Set realistic expectations for a sparse tree
11. Distinguish flattened branches from missing foliage
Fluffing can improve the shape of branches that were compressed for storage. It cannot restore branches that are missing or broken, and decorations are not a reliable fix for widespread bare sections. If the tree remains visibly sparse after careful shaping, use fillers selectively or accept that its underlying foliage limits the result.
12. Do a final room-view check
When decorating is complete, look at the tree from the angles people will normally see it. Move a branch, garland or greenery stem only where a visible gap remains, then check the silhouette again. No quantified result is established for these methods, so judge the change by the appearance of your particular tree rather than expecting a guaranteed degree of fullness.
