Its fuse helps protect the appliance cable from overheating if there is an overload or fault. If a plug or cable is damaged, hot, making crackling or buzzing sounds, or repeatedly blowing fuses, stop using the item and ask the retailer, manufacturer or a qualified repair technician for help. Do not attempt electrical repairs unless you are competent to do them.
What is a UK plug?
The familiar UK plug has three rectangular pins and is rated at 13 amps. It is the most common plug for modern domestic appliances. The British Standards Institution (BSI) says the BS 1363 series sets requirements for the UK plug and socket system, including safety, construction, dimensional accuracy, testing and marking. BS 1363-1 covers 13A fused plugs, including insulating sleeves on the line and neutral pins. BSI: BS 1363 – 13A plugs, socket-outlets, adaptors, and connection units.
For standards and compliance work, check BSI for the current standard and amendments. The HSE standards table lists BS 1363 Parts 1–5 for 13A plugs, socket-outlets and adaptors, and BS 1362 for general-purpose fuse links primarily used in plugs; the publication years shown in that table are not proof that those editions remain current. HSE: Electrical standards and approved codes of practice.
What does the plug fuse do?
The fuse is designed to break the circuit if excessive current flows because of an overload or fault. Interrupting the current helps prevent the cable and appliance from overheating and causing a fire. It is a protective device, not a way to make an unsuitable appliance safe or to fix a fault.

Electrical Safety First says modern UK plugs usually use a 3A or 13A fuse; 5A fuses remain in some older equipment. Use the rating specified in the appliance instructions. A replacement fuse should be the same rating, suitable for the plug and compliant with BS 1362; Electrical Safety First advises checking for the BS 1362 marking on the fuse body. A higher-rated fuse is not an upgrade. If a replacement fuse blows again, stop using the appliance and seek advice rather than repeatedly replacing it. How to make a safe visual check
Unplug the item before inspecting it. This is a visual check, not an invitation to rewire or repair a plug. Look for:

For identification only, modern wiring colours are brown for live (L), blue for neutral (N), and green-and-yellow for earth (E). Older plugs may have red for live, black for neutral and green for earth. Do not rely on colour identification as a reason to open, alter or reconnect wiring. HSE warns: “Even incorrectly wiring a plug can be dangerous and lead to fatal accidents or fires.” Repairs should be carried out by a competent person. HSE: Introduction to electrical safety.
Warning signs: when to stop using an appliance
Stop using the item if you notice burn or scorch marks, a plug that is hot, buzzing or crackling, a fuse that blows, or a circuit-breaker that trips. Unplug it if it is safe to do so, then contact the retailer, manufacturer or a qualified repair technician. Do not keep resetting a breaker or replacing fuses to continue using equipment that may be faulty. GOV.UK also identifies hot plugs or sockets, unexplained blown fuses or tripped breakers, scorch marks and flickering lights as possible signs of dangerous or loose wiring. Do not diagnose or repair a suspected installation fault based on a plug check. HSE says equipment should suit its intended use and surroundings, and warns that equipment unsuitable for wet environments can become live. If you suspect an issue with the socket or fixed wiring, stop using it and contact a competent electrician. HSE: Introduction to electrical safety.
Use adaptors and extension leads carefully
Do not plug one extension lead into another. Electrical Safety First advises using only one socket extension lead per socket because a chain of leads can overload the wall socket. Extension leads and adaptors have current limits: follow their markings and instructions, and avoid running multiple high-power appliances from the same supply. GOV.UK advises giving certain high-power appliances, such as washing machines, a socket to themselves where possible. Electrical Safety First: Plugs and fuses; GOV.UK: Fire safety in the home.

Which rules apply across the UK?
BS 1363 describes the UK plug and socket system, but product-supply regulations are a separate matter. GOV.UK’s guidance on the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 concerns products supplied in or into Great Britain and notes that some provisions differ in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework. It is not a complete summary of every legal obligation across the UK. GOV.UK: Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016: Great Britain.
Plug-in solar is a special case, not a reason to assume ordinary appliance plugs are generally unsuitable. The government consultation describes a proposed limited amendment to BS 1363 and an interim product specification for plug-in solar. Check the latest official position before relying on any claim about its current status. GOV.UK: Plug-in solar consultation document.
