Start with the light and usable surfaces you actually have, then choose plants and containers that fit them. Portable pots, saucers, and—when needed—wheeled caddies can make a small balcony, patio, doorstep, or indoor corner work for greenery without permanent installation. The right setup still depends on each plant’s needs, your watering routine, and how safely you can manage runoff and weight.
Start with light and usable space
Before buying a planter, note where you can place it and how much natural light that spot receives. Measure the surface and consider whether you need to move the container to water, clean, or make room. On a balcony or doorstep, check whether there is a safe place for water to drain or be caught.
Match plant choice to the conditions, rather than assuming any plant will thrive in any pot or corner. The Royal Horticultural Society says almost any type of plant can be grown in a container, but suitability depends on the plant and the care it receives: RHS guidance on growing plants in containers. Container plants also have less compost available than plants in the ground, so they commonly need more frequent watering and feeding.
Choose a portable container setup

Containers suit limited spaces such as balconies, patios, and doorsteps, and can be moved more easily than plants rooted in the ground. For a plant you expect to reposition often, choose a size you can move safely when filled, or plan for a wheeled caddy before the pot becomes too heavy.

Keep drainage and runoff under control
Choose a container with drainage holes; drainage is important for container plants. If water could run onto a neighbor’s balcony or space below, place a saucer beneath the pot to catch runoff. The University of Maryland Extension’s container-growing guidance recommends saucers for this purpose. A saucer catches water but does not replace drainage holes.
Account for filled weight before committing
A container that seems light when empty can become difficult to move once filled with moist growing medium and a plant. University of Maryland Extension gives the example of a 20-inch-diameter container weighing 100 lb when filled with moist growing medium and plants; this is a practical example, not a general average. A plant caddy—a low wheeled platform for a pot—can make a heavy container easier to reposition, though it does not make every surface or placement suitable.

Match watering to your routine
Use a self-watering planter only when the plant suits it
A self-watering container uses a reservoir and wick to keep growing medium evenly moist over time. Virginia Tech Extension says this arrangement can suit people who travel or have limited time for maintenance, but it is not a good match for plants that prefer drier soil. Reservoirs also need regular checking and cleaning: Virginia Tech Extension’s guidance on watering container houseplants.
Plan for ordinary container watering too
Without a reservoir, container plants still need attention: limited compost means they commonly require more frequent watering and feeding than in-ground plants. Choose a container and plant combination that fits the time you can give it, and make sure you can reach the pot to water it without spilling runoff where it should not go.

Choose indoor plants with the available light in mind
Indoor spots can receive less light than plants need. University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that plant lights can help when natural light is insufficient, but lighting is not a guarantee that every plant or setup will work. Select a plant suited to the space, then consider supplemental lighting if the available natural light is not enough: University of Florida IFAS Extension’s houseplant-care guidance.
