No—wait until the thunderstorm has passed before showering. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises avoiding showers and other plumbing during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel into a building through pipes or wires and move through its plumbing and electrical systems. After the last thunder, remain in safe shelter for at least 30 minutes before resuming normal activities.
Why a shower is not safe during a thunderstorm
Being indoors does not remove the risk. The NWS says lightning can enter a structure through a direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside, or through the ground. Once inside, it can travel through plumbing and electrical systems, as well as phone, radio, or television reception systems. That is why the NWS specifically advises: “Do not wash your hands, take a shower or wash dishes.” NWS: Lightning Indoors
This is general public safety guidance, not a quantified estimate of the risk for a particular shower or building. Do not assume that a particular home’s pipes or materials make showering safe during a storm.
What to do while thunder is occurring
- Get to safe shelter. If you hear thunder, go inside a substantial enclosed building or into an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with the windows closed. NWS: Lightning Tips
- Avoid plumbing and electrical equipment. Do not shower, bathe, use sinks, wash dishes, or use other plumbing. Avoid corded phones and electrical equipment, and stay away from windows and doors. NWS indoor guidance and NWS lightning safety overview
- Wait after the last thunder. Stay in safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder. NWS: Lightning Tips
Cellular and cordless phones are safe to use, according to the NWS indoor guidance. A weather alert or the apparent end of rainfall is not a reason to disregard the wait period: use the last thunder as the timing reference.

When you can shower again
Wait until the storm has passed and at least 30 minutes have elapsed since the last thunder. Then you can resume normal activities, including showering. The NWS Melbourne’s regional lightning rules also advise avoiding showers and plumbing during thunderstorms: NWS Melbourne: Lightning Rules.
If someone is struck by lightning
Call 911 and get prompt medical help. A person struck by lightning does not carry an electrical charge and is safe to touch, so do not delay aid out of concern that touching them will shock you. NWS Melbourne: Lightning Rules
