For a clean tear with sturdy fabric around it, bring the edges together and sew them. For a hole, fraying opening, or worn patch, sew a light patch over the damage, anchoring it in sound fabric beyond the weak area. A tear at a seam can often be repaired by aligning and resewing the seam. Iron-on mending fabric is another option only if the sheet can tolerate the product’s specified heat.
Choose the repair to match the damage

Inspect and prepare the sheet
- Lay the sheet flat and inspect the tear, hole, or seam and the fabric around it. Wash and dry it according to its care label if needed; washing is specifically included in the cited Dritz iron-on directions, but it is not established as a requirement before every sewn repair.
- Decide whether the opening has sound edges that can be joined or whether the surrounding fabric is thin, fraying, or worn and needs a patch.
- Consider where the damage sits. A thick seam or patch on the side that touches the sleeper may be noticeable. Before finishing, feel the repair from that side and check that it lies flat.
Sew a clean tear
Bring the raw edges together without pulling them so tightly that the sheet puckers. Sew along the tear by hand or with a machine. If the fabric has a distinct right and wrong side, Make: suggests working a zigzag stitch from the wrong side. Keep the stitching in sound fabric where possible, rather than repeatedly sewing through a frayed edge.
Patch a hole or worn area
- Choose a lightweight patch large enough to extend beyond the damaged area onto cloth that can hold stitches. A patch that is too small may leave the stitching anchored in weak fabric.
- Lay the patch flat over the damage and pin it in place without stretching or bunching the sheet.
- Sew close to the patch’s perimeter, securing it to the stronger surrounding fabric. Add a second line only if needed to secure an edge.
- Feel the repaired area from the side that will touch the sleeper and check for raised edges or uncomfortable bulk before putting the sheet back into use.
A general woven-textile guide from iFixit describes an inside patch extending beyond a hole, but its suggested margin is not validated specifically for bed sheets. The sheet-specific guidance supports anchoring a patch around its perimeter without establishing a universal patch size.
Repair a tear at a seam
Align the separated parts of the seam, fold and press the fabric into position, then sew close to the fold, following the existing seam as closely as practical. This method is described by Needlepointers.com. Check that the repair lies flat and does not create an uncomfortable ridge on the sleep surface.

Use iron-on mending fabric only when the sheet allows it
Check the sheet’s fiber content and care label before applying heat, then follow the directions on the particular mending product. Prym Americas describes its Dritz Iron-On Mending Fabric for repairing a “tear, worn area or hole.” For the cited Dritz product, the maker instructs users to wash and dry the fabric, cut the mending fabric slightly larger than the damaged area, round its corners, press it on a cotton setting for 40 to 45 seconds, let it cool, and check the bond. Those timing and heat directions are specific to that product and should be checked against its current packaging; they are not general instructions for all iron-on patches.

Look beyond the visible opening: if the fabric is thin across a broad area, stitches or a patch may have little sound cloth to hold onto. There is no established size or wear threshold that determines when a sheet cannot be repaired. Judge whether a patch can be anchored beyond the weak area and whether its placement will be comfortable. If not, repurpose the sheet rather than relying on an unsupported promise of repair strength or lifespan.
