For a healthy pink anthurium, give it bright, indirect light, warmth, humid air and an airy, free-draining potting mix. Water when the surface layer begins to dry, then let excess drain away; persistently wet compost can damage the roots. “Pink anthurium” usually refers to a pink-flowered form of Anthurium andraeanum, but it does not identify one specific cultivar.

What is a pink anthurium?

Anthurium andraeanum, also called flamingo flower, has a glossy, often heart-shaped spathe—the colored modified leaf—around a spadix bearing tiny flowers. Spathes come in several colors, including pink. Pink forms are not all alike: the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes ‘Zizou’ as having glossy pink spathes and a darker purple spadix, while ‘Sweet Dream’ has soft pink spathes. If you want a particular shade or flower form, check the cultivar name and the seller’s description rather than relying on “pink anthurium” alone. RHS guidance on growing anthuriums and its ‘Sweet Dream’ plant entry describe these distinctions.

Where should you place it?

Bright, indirect light

Choose a bright spot near a window where the plant is protected from strong direct sun. An east- or west-facing window may work; soften strong light from a south-facing window with a sheer curtain or other shade. Direct sun can scorch leaves, while too little light can slow growth and reduce flowering. See North Carolina State University Extension’s care profile.

Warm, steady conditions

Keep the plant away from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes. North Carolina State University Extension gives 65–80°F as a preferred range for A. andraeanum; its broader Anthurium profile gives 65–85°F, and the RHS species entry says to keep the plant above 18°C. These are recommendations from different horticultural guides, not one experimentally established threshold. Avoid placing the pot beside a frequently opened exterior door or a heating or cooling vent.

Humid air

Anthuriums prefer humid conditions. North Carolina State University Extension lists 60–80% humidity for A. andraeanum, while the University of Florida IFAS Extension advises humidity above 50% for Anthurium. A naturally humid room, grouping plants together or a pebble tray with water below the pot can help; dry indoor air may cause brown leaf edges. Occasional misting should not be treated as a dependable way to maintain steady humidity.

How should you pot and water it?

Use an airy, acidic mix

The RHS recommends an acidic, open mix of two parts ericaceous peat-free compost, one part horticultural grit or perlite, and one part medium orchid bark. The University of Florida IFAS Extension also notes that Anthurium needs soil high in organic matter. Bark is one ingredient in this blend, not a complete potting medium by itself. Use a pot with drainage holes so excess water can escape.

  • Air Purifying: Anthuriums are effective air purifiers. They can help remove common indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene, and xylene from the air, contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
  • Year-Round Blooms: With proper care, Anthurium plants can bloom throughout the year. They require bright, indirect light and high humidity to thrive and continuously produce their characteristic spathes and spadices.
  • Care Requirements: Anthuriums prefer well-draining soil and should be watered regularly but not overwatered. They benefit from occasional misting to maintain humidity and should be placed in areas with indirect light to avoid leaf burn.

Water by checking the mix, not by the calendar

Check the surface before watering. North Carolina State University Extension recommends watering when the top inch feels dry; the RHS advises waiting until the compost is approaching dryness and checking about two inches below the surface. In practice, water when the upper layer has begun to dry, then allow the pot to drain fully. The interval varies with room conditions, pot size and mix. Rainwater or purified or filtered water at room temperature is recommended by these sources. Do not leave the root ball standing in waterlogged compost, which can lead to root rot.

How do you feed, prune and repot it?

Feeding

Published feeding schedules differ. North Carolina State University Extension recommends liquid fertilizer weekly during the growing season for A. andraeanum; the RHS species page recommends orchid fertilizer every two weeks from spring to autumn. Choose one schedule appropriate to the fertilizer you have and follow its label rather than combining the rates.

Pruning

Remove dead leaves and spent flower stems at the base with clean cutting tools. North Carolina State University Extension notes that removing old, spent blooms can encourage further flowering.

Repotting

Repot in spring when the plant is rootbound, or roughly every two to three years. Move it to a pot only one size larger than the current one: an oversized container can hold wet compost for too long and increase the risk of root problems. The RHS notes that a plant may stay in its original pot for a year or two before periodic repotting.

How can you propagate a pink anthurium?

Division or stem cuttings are the simplest home-growing methods supported by North Carolina State University Extension and the RHS. The RHS also lists rhizome cuttings, offsets and seed. Seed is a more involved option: its guidance is to sow it as soon as ripe at 24–27°C.

What do yellow leaves, brown edges or poor flowering mean?

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering, poor drainage or a lack of nutrients can be contributing factors. Check whether the mix is staying wet and whether the pot drains before adding fertilizer.
  • Brown leaf tips or edges: Dry air can be the cause. Consider whether the room is heated and dry, and whether you can improve humidity around the plant.
  • Few flowers or slow growth: Inadequate light can reduce growth and flowering. Move the plant to a brighter position while still protecting it from direct sun.
  • Scorched leaves: Strong direct sunlight may be burning the foliage; provide filtered light.
  • Soft, failing roots or persistently wet compost: Excess water and poor drainage raise the risk of root rot. Let the mix begin to dry between waterings and ensure water can drain freely.
  • Leaf spots: North Carolina State University Extension notes that poor air circulation or wet foliage may contribute. Improve air movement around the plant and avoid leaving foliage wet.

Check regularly for mealybugs, scale, aphids and spider mites. North Carolina State University Extension’s general Anthurium profile also lists whiteflies and thrips as possible pests.

Is a pink anthurium safe around pets and children?

No: keep it out of reach of young children and pets that may chew it. North Carolina State University Extension describes A. andraeanum as toxic if ingested by people or pets. The University of Florida IFAS Extension says Anthurium contains calcium oxalate crystals and may cause contact dermatitis or gastrointestinal irritation. The RHS advises keeping anthuriums out of reach and wearing gloves when handling them. Treat the plant as an exposure hazard and avoid contact with sap or chewed plant material.
