13 Parts of a Fireplace Explained: A Masonry Fireplace Anatomy Guide

A fireplace is a connected system, not just an opening and chimney. Identify 13 common diagram labels, from the firebox and hearth to the damper, flue and smoke chamber.

A conventional masonry fireplace works as one connected system: the firebox holds the fire, the hearth protects the floor at the opening, and smoke travels through the throat, smoke chamber, flue and chimney. This guide explains 13 common labels used on a fireplace anatomy diagram. The count is specific to that diagram—not a universal parts list—and features vary by fireplace design and fuel.

What are the parts of a fireplace?

Fireplace diagrams can group components differently. Historic England describes the chimneybreast, hearth and chimneypiece as the three main architectural parts; technical cross-sections add internal venting and ash-removal components. The 13 labels below combine those visible and concealed elements into a practical guide to a conventional masonry fireplace.

Use the drawing alongside the list: a chimney cap, flue liner, ash dump or ash pit may not appear in every fireplace. A factory-built, gas or other appliance can have a different construction and must be understood using its own listing and instructions.

How smoke moves through the fireplace

When a wood fire burns, combustion gases leave the firebox through the throat and smoke chamber, then rise through the flue and chimney to the outlet. The damper sits in this vent path. The smoke shelf is behind the damper and smoke-chamber area. These parts work together; they are not separate decorative features.

The hearth and lintel serve different purposes at the opening: the hearth provides a noncombustible surface at or in front of it, while the lintel supports masonry above it. The mantel or chimneypiece frames the opening.

The 13 parts of a fireplace

1. Chimney

The chimney is the structure carrying the venting route above the fireplace and through the roof. In a masonry system, it surrounds the flue. Its exterior portion is visible above the roof, while much of the venting system is concealed.

2. Chimney cap

A chimney cap is a covering or termination fitted at the top of some chimneys. It appears on some diagrams, but is not shown on every reference drawing, so do not assume every fireplace has the same termination detail.

3. Flue liner

The flue liner is the lining of the flue passage. Its material and arrangement can differ between installations; the label does not imply one standard liner design. Some diagrams identify the flue and liner separately.

4. Flue

The flue is the passage that carries smoke and combustion gases toward the chimney outlet. It is the interior route within the larger chimney structure.

5. Smoke chamber

The smoke chamber is the transition between the firebox and the flue. It gathers smoke above the throat and directs it upward toward the narrower flue passage.

6. Smoke shelf

The smoke shelf is a ledge behind the damper and smoke-chamber area. It is an internal feature shown in technical fireplace cross-sections and installation diagrams.

7. Damper

The damper is a movable plate or mechanism in the vent path. A cited fireplace installation manual describes its role as restricting room air from escaping up the flue when the fireplace is not in use, and says to remove it or lock it open for fireplace use. Follow the instructions for the specific fireplace; do not rely on a generic diagram to operate an unfamiliar appliance.

FEED GARDEN 5-Piece Fireplace Tool Set, 30" One-Piece Stand, 10mm Solid
  • 【10MM SOLID WROUGHT IRON · 10 LB TOTAL SET WEIGHT】Every tool is built on a 10mm-diameter solid wrought iron rod — solid stock, not a hollow tube — and the complete 5-piece set weighs 10 lb (4.5 kg). You feel it the moment you lift the poker: a solid rod resists flexing when you lever a burning log, with no thin wall to dent or crimp. Black powder-coat finish helps resist rust and scuffing from ash and embers.
  • 【ONE-PIECE TOOL SHAFTS — NO MID-SHAFT THREADS】Each poker, shovel, brush and tong is one continuous shaft: the handle is not threaded onto a separate rod part-way down, so there is no mid-shaft joint to work loose while you are stirring a hot fire. Assembly is the base only — a magnetic-tip screwdriver is included, and you never thread a tool to a handle.
  • 【FOR WOOD FIRES — INDOOR HEARTH, WOOD STOVE, PATIO & FIRE PIT】Sized for a standard home hearth and equally at home on a covered porch or beside a backyard fire pit: the 25" tools reach across a full log bed, and the 30" stand keeps them upright and within arm's length of your chair. Built for wood-burning fires where you actually move logs and clear ash — for a gas or electric fireplace there are no logs to tend, so this set is not the right fit.
  • 【COMPLETE 5-PIECE SET WITH TONGS · 30" STAND, 25" TOOLS, 9"x6" BASE】Poker to move burning logs, tongs to grip and reposition firewood, brush to sweep fine ash, shovel to scoop ash out — all four tools plus the stand, so nothing is missing the first time you light a fire. Each tool 25" long; stand 30" tall; rectangular base 9" x 6" — a broad, flat footprint for steadier standing in a busy room. Handles sit 25" back from the flame, so your hand stays outside the heat plume.
  • 【MODERN, MINIMALIST, FARMHOUSE & CLASSIC DÉCOR】A clean matte-black silhouette that reads as a deliberate piece of hearth furniture rather than a utility tool — it is what owners comment on most often. Care: keep it under cover or bring it indoors in wet weather to keep the powder coat looking new,for extended tending, fireplace gloves are still recommended.

8. Throat

The throat is the narrowed passage above the firebox opening leading into the smoke chamber. It is part of the route that funnels smoke from the firebox toward the flue.

9. Lintel

The lintel is a horizontal, noncombustible support above the fireplace opening. The International Code Council’s 2024 EPCOT Residential Code states that masonry over a fireplace opening must be supported by a lintel of noncombustible material. That model-code provision applies only where adopted and relevant to the project.

10. Firebox

The firebox is the high-heat interior area that contains the fire. Its construction differs between masonry and factory-built fireplaces, so a masonry cross-section should not be used to infer the construction of a listed appliance.

11. Hearth

The hearth is the noncombustible surface at the fireplace opening and may include an area extending in front of it. A diagram may distinguish the inner hearth from the hearth extension; check which surface its label points to.

12. Ash dump or ash pit

An ash dump is an opening that lets ash fall from the fireplace into an ash pit below, where it can be removed. These ash-handling features appear in some cross-sections, but are optional and are not present in every fireplace.

13. Mantel or chimneypiece

The mantel is the shelf or framing around the fireplace opening. “Chimneypiece” commonly refers to the ornamental surround; Historic England distinguishes it from the mantel, which is a common feature. A diagram may label the mantel shelf and surround separately.

What is the part above the firebox called?

There is not just one part above the firebox. Immediately above the opening, the throat narrows the smoke path; above it, the smoke chamber transitions toward the flue. A lintel is also located above the opening, but it is a support for masonry rather than part of the venting passage.

Which parts are optional or diagram-specific?

A 13-label illustration is a convenient guide, not an inventory that every fireplace must match. Depending on construction and design, it may show or omit a chimney cap, flue liner, ash dump, ash pit, cleanout door or outside-air intake. Architectural diagrams may also split the mantel shelf, surround, hearth slab or hearth extension into separate labels.

Visible elements such as the mantel and hearth are easier to identify from the room. The damper, smoke shelf, smoke chamber, flue and ash pit may be partly or wholly concealed. If a hidden component matters for repair or alteration, have it identified on site rather than inferring its presence or condition from a generic cross-section.

Dimensions and code: what the figures do—and do not—mean

The International Code Council’s 2024 EPCOT Residential Code gives masonry-fireplace examples of a minimum firebox depth of 20 inches (508 mm) and a minimum throat location 8 inches (203 mm) above the opening. These are provisions from a specific model-code edition and masonry context, not universal dimensions or a statement of the law in every location. Local adoption, amendments, project applicability and the appliance listing all matter.

For significant reconstruction, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2008 Rehab Guide: HVAC, Volume 8 advises reviewing applicable codes and recommends using a competent mason familiar with recommended practices for rebuilding. The older HUD and installation-manual drawings are useful for vocabulary, not substitutes for current local requirements or manufacturer instructions.

When a diagram is not enough

An anatomy guide cannot establish whether a fireplace is safe, correctly built or in good condition. Smoke behavior, visible damage, concealed parts and proposed alterations call for assessment by an appropriately qualified local professional. For a factory-built or other listed appliance, use the manufacturer’s instructions and listing rather than applying masonry-fireplace details by analogy.
