There is no universal winner between bamboo and wood flooring. Bamboo flooring comes in several constructions, while wood flooring may be solid or engineered; performance depends on the exact product, finish, room conditions, and installation requirements. Compare those details—not just the material names—before choosing.
How do bamboo and wood flooring differ in construction?
“Bamboo” and “wood” each describe a family of flooring products, not a single standardized plank. Construction affects appearance, dimensional behavior, wear, and whether the surface can be refinished.
Bamboo flooring
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) describes horizontal and vertical laminated bamboo. Horizontal boards tend to display bamboo nodes more prominently; vertical lamination has a more linear look. Indoor bamboo flooring also includes other constructions: ISO 21629-1:2021 covers laminated bamboo, scrimber, bamboo-wood composite, and flattened bamboo products. These categories should not be assumed to perform identically.
Solid and engineered wood
NWFA defines solid wood flooring as one piece of wood through the board. Engineered wood flooring is made of layers, with a real-wood top layer. Engineered boards generally expand and contract less than solid wood, but they typically cannot be refinished as many times. The usable surface layer and the manufacturer’s refinishing instructions matter for a particular product.

| Decision | Bamboo flooring | Wood flooring | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | May be horizontal or vertical laminated bamboo, strand-woven, scrimber, bamboo-wood composite, or flattened bamboo. | May be solid or engineered, with species and construction varying by product. | Exact construction, core, usable surface layer, and product specification. |
| Appearance | Horizontal lamination tends to show nodes; vertical lamination has a more linear appearance. | Appearance varies by species, grade, cut, board width, and finish. | Look at samples in the room and light where the floor will be installed. |
| Dent resistance | Varies by construction and product. | Species Janka ratings provide a general indication for solid wood, not engineered flooring. | Compare test methods and products; do not treat dent resistance as scratch resistance. |
| Moisture and movement | A universal bamboo moisture rating is not established by the cited sources. | Wood can swell in humid conditions and shrink in dry conditions; engineered construction generally moves less than solid wood. | Room conditions and the specific product’s acclimation, moisture, and installation requirements. |
| Refinishing | A single refinishing rule for all bamboo constructions is not established. | Solid wood can often be refinished many times; engineered flooring may allow fewer refinishes, depending on construction. | Usable layer thickness and written manufacturer refinishing guidance. |
| Finish and care | Follow the product’s finish and care instructions. | Finishes and maintenance differ; lower sheen can make small scratches less noticeable. | Finish type, sheen, repair method, cleaning instructions, and warranty conditions. |
Is bamboo flooring harder than hardwood?
Not as a category-wide rule. The Janka test measures resistance to indentation: NWFA describes it as the force needed to push a 0.444-inch steel ball halfway into wood. NWFA’s published species ratings apply to solid wood species, not engineered wood flooring.
The Bamboo Flooring Company reports a Janka result of 3,562 lbf (15.8 kN) for its UNICLIC strand-woven bamboo flooring. That is a manufacturer-reported, product-specific result; the year is not stated in the product data sheet. It is not a universal bamboo value or proof that bamboo outperforms every wood floor.

Hardness is only one part of durability. It does not, by itself, establish resistance to surface scratches, finish wear, moisture-related movement, or the number of times a floor can be refinished. Compare the same kinds of products and test information where available.
Which floor handles your room’s moisture conditions?
Wood responds to changes in humidity: it can swell in humid conditions and shrink in dry conditions, potentially contributing to cupping, gaps, or splits. NWFA recommends maintaining a home between 60–80°F and 30–50% relative humidity year-round for wood floors. This is NWFA guidance for wood flooring, not a bamboo specification or a guarantee against problems.

For indoor bamboo flooring, ISO 21629-1:2021 sets out product-related technical requirements and test methods, including handling, storage, packaging, and marking. Its public abstract does not state a universal consumer-facing moisture tolerance. Follow the chosen manufacturer’s installation guide, acclimation instructions, and room-use limitations rather than assuming bamboo is water-resistant.
NWFA describes solid wood as suitable for on- or above-grade rooms and engineered wood as less prone to expansion and contraction, making engineered construction a possible basement option. That general guidance does not guarantee suitability for a particular basement: check site moisture, the subfloor, and the product’s installation requirements with the manufacturer and installer.

How should you compare finish, care, and refinishing?
NWFA explains that a finish protects wood from everyday wear and describes both surface and penetrating finishes. Lower-sheen surfaces make small scratches less noticeable, though no sheen makes a floor scratch-proof. Bamboo products also vary in finish, so use the product’s own care and repair guidance rather than transferring instructions from a different floor.
- Check the finish type and sheen, plus the manufacturer’s approved cleaning products and repair method.
- For wood floors, NWFA recommends protector pads beneath furniture legs that contact the floor to help prevent scratches.
- Check whether refinishing is permitted and, if so, the usable surface-layer thickness and any limits stated by the manufacturer.
- Read warranty conditions alongside care instructions; coverage can depend on installation and maintenance requirements.
What should you check before choosing?
Compare products intended for the same room and installation conditions. An engineered wood plank is not interchangeable with solid wood, and neither is automatically equivalent to a bamboo plank simply because both are sold as flooring.

- Identify the construction. Record whether the bamboo is horizontal or vertical laminated, strand-woven, or another construction; for wood, establish whether it is solid or engineered.
- Inspect appearance in context. Compare installed-room samples, accounting for light, board width, species or bamboo pattern, grade, and finish.
- Read performance claims narrowly. Find out what product and test method a hardness figure describes; do not use it to infer scratch resistance or overall lifespan.
- Match the floor to the room. Check expected temperature and humidity, subfloor conditions, grade level, and the manufacturer’s room-use, moisture, and acclimation instructions.
- Confirm care and future options. Review finish, cleaning, repair, furniture protection, usable surface thickness, and refinishing instructions.
- Compare the full installation proposal. Get current material and installed costs for comparable products in your area, and confirm the warranty, installation guide, and subfloor requirements with the supplier or installer.
The cited sources do not establish a representative price comparison, universal lifespan, or broad environmental advantage for either category. Those claims require product-specific or comparable evidence; they cannot be inferred from the material name alone.
