You do not need to cut back every perennial before winter. Hosta, daylily, peony, iris, yarrow, and garden phlox are often suitable candidates after their foliage dies back. Healthy coneflowers, ornamental grasses, and black-eyed Susans can usually stay standing until spring, where their stems and seed heads offer winter interest and wildlife habitat. Plant health, species, and local climate matter more than a blanket fall-cleanup rule.

Should you cut back all your perennials this fall?

No. Leaving healthy stems and leaves through winter can protect plant crowns and roots, catch insulating leaves, and provide food or shelter for wildlife. Waiting also avoids removing useful cover before cold weather arrives. Some gardeners prefer a tidy fall garden, but appearance is only one consideration.

Use the plant’s condition as your first guide: cut back selected perennials after natural dieback, and remove foliage or debris from plants that had serious disease or insect problems. Iowa State University Extension advises keeping diseased or infected material and seed heads out of a typical home compost pile. Dispose of it according to local guidance.

Six plants often suitable for fall cutback

UNH Extension names the following as examples of perennials that may be cut back in fall. Wait until foliage has died back rather than removing healthy growth early. These are candidates, not a requirement to cut every plant in every garden.

  1. Hosta: Remove dead foliage after it dies back, particularly if the plant had disease or pest problems.
  2. Daylily: Cut back spent foliage once it has naturally declined.
  3. Peony: Remove dead stems and leaves after dieback; take extra care to clear material from plants with disease issues.
  4. Iris: Cut back dead foliage after the growing season, especially where disease was present.
  5. Yarrow: Remove dead growth if you want a cleaner winter bed or need to clear unhealthy material.
  6. Garden phlox: Cut back after dieback, and remove debris from plants that experienced disease or pests.

For all six, the timing and amount of cleanup can depend on the plant’s health and the conditions in your garden. If foliage is healthy and you value winter cover, leaving some stems until spring is also a reasonable choice.

Three plants to leave standing when healthy

These plants can contribute winter structure, habitat, or food. Leave healthy growth in place until spring; remove material if it is diseased or pest-infested.

How to decide what to do in your garden

  • Is the plant herbaceous or woody? The six cutback examples and three leave-standing examples are perennials. Shrubs need a separate decision based on species and flowering habit.
  • Was the foliage healthy? Clear diseased or pest-affected material after dieback rather than leaving it as winter cover.
  • Would standing growth serve a purpose? Stems and leaves can protect crowns and roots, collect insulating leaves, and support beneficial insects, pollinators, and birds.
  • Does local timing matter? Climate and species affect when plants die back and when pruning is appropriate. Follow locally relevant extension advice for your area.

Do not apply perennial cutback advice to shrubs

Woody shrubs follow different pruning rules. Iowa State notes that stems of shrubs cut back, including butterfly bush and bigleaf hydrangea, can remain until spring. North Carolina Cooperative Extension explains that spring-blooming shrubs such as bigleaf hydrangea flower on growth from the previous year and advises shaping them after flowering. That advice is regional; it is not a nationwide calendar rule. Check species-specific guidance for your location before pruning a shrub.
