For cleaner plywood cuts, match the blade to the saw, support the sheet securely, guide the cut, and orient the panel so the blade exits on the less-visible face. WOOD Magazine’s 13 techniques address both table saws and handheld circular saws; the right combination depends on the cut and which faces will show.
Choose the setup for the saw and cut
| Setup | Best-face orientation | Guidance and support | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Table saw | Good face up | Fence, stable infeed and outfeed support, and a compatible zero-clearance insert when available | Making repeatable cuts on a panel the saw can safely handle |
| Handheld circular saw | Good face down | Compatible track or edge guide, or a clamped straightedge; support the full panel during the cut | Breaking down large sheets or cutting panels that are awkward to feed across a table saw |
These are setup distinctions, not a claim that one saw is always better. A 3/4-inch hardwood plywood sheet can weigh 60 or 70 pounds, an illustrative handling estimate cited by WOOD Magazine in 2023 rather than a universal weight specification.
13 ways to improve plywood cuts
1. Raise the table-saw blade for cut quality
WOOD Magazine advises raising the blade to change how the teeth meet the top veneer, which can improve cut quality. Treat this as technique guidance, not a universal safety rule: follow your saw’s manual and safe operating practice when setting blade height.
2. Fit a zero-clearance table insert
A close-fitting insert supports the plywood right beside the blade, helping reduce chip-out on the underside. The insert must be made for your saw; do not use one that does not fit or function correctly with that model.

- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
3. Score the cut when both faces matter
For a cleaner edge on both faces, WOOD recommends making a shallow scoring pass first, then raising the blade and completing the cut. Its suggested scoring depth is about 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Set up and make both passes in accordance with the saw manual.
4. Match the blade and feed to the job
For general table-saw use, WOOD recommends a sharp combination blade and a slow feed. For a smoother sheet-goods finish, it names an 80-tooth blade. For handheld circular saws, it recommends a carbide-tipped plywood blade; Kreg also recommends carbide and higher tooth counts for smoother cuts.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Those are source-specific recommendations, not interchangeable specifications or universal tooth-count requirements. Before fitting a blade, check that its diameter, arbor, kerf, and design suit the saw and the cut.
5. Leave material for a final trim
When the edge needs to be especially clean and accurately sized, cut the panel 1/16 to 1/8 inch oversize, then trim it to the final dimension with a bearing-guided pattern bit and straightedge, as WOOD describes. This approach requires suitable routing equipment and a secure setup.

6. Tape the cutline for minor tear-out
Firmly pressing low-adhesion masking tape over the cutline can help hold small fibers as the blade passes. WOOD recommends low-adhesion tape because it is more likely to peel away easily than stronger tape. Tape can help with minor fiber tear-out; it does not replace an appropriate blade or support.
7. Support the sheet from start to finish
On a table saw, arrange stable infeed, side, and outfeed support at table height so the panel remains supported throughout the cut. WOOD lists rollers, a correctly positioned sawhorse, and shop surfaces as possible supports. Set them up so the sheet stays level and does not bind or shift.

8. Keep the panel against the table-saw fence
Consistent fence contact helps keep a table-saw cut accurate. Use hand positions and push devices only as directed by the saw manufacturer and safe operating practice; do not copy a hand-placement description without checking that safety context.
9. Treat a hardboard saw shoe as an advanced workaround
WOOD describes attaching 1/4-inch hardboard to a circular-saw shoe and cutting a matching opening for the blade. The close-fitting opening can support fibers near the cut, but this method exposes the blade and requires extra caution. It is not the default setup; use the saw as designed unless you can safely make and operate the modification in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

10. Trim a small edge from both ends
For a small edge-trimming task, WOOD suggests jointing a short section from one end and finishing from the opposite direction. This limits the distance the blade travels toward the trailing corner, where chip-out can occur.
11. Put the show face on the blade-entry side
The blade is most likely to splinter the face where its teeth exit the panel. On a table saw, the teeth exit underneath, so keep the good face up. With a handheld circular saw, the teeth exit at the top, so keep the good face down.
12. Rough-cut large sheets on a sacrificial surface
For breaking down a heavy sheet before more precise cuts, WOOD suggests placing it on a 4-by-8-foot, 2-inch foam insulation board at floor level. Set the blade depth and support the panel appropriately, and secure the work so it cannot move. Foam is a sacrificial cutting surface, not a substitute for stable support or workholding.
13. Guide the circular saw with a straightedge or track
A clamped factory edge of scrap plywood or hardboard can serve as a straightedge guide. Commercial edge guides and track guides, such as the categories described by Kreg, can make accurate, repeatable sheet cuts more convenient. Choose a guide for the cut direction and sheet size, and verify that it is compatible with the saw.

- For one visible face: orient the good face away from the blade-exit side: up on a table saw or down beneath a handheld circular saw.
- For two visible faces: consider a scoring pass on the table saw, a suitable zero-clearance insert, or a final oversize-and-trim approach where the tools and setup allow.
- For a long cut in a large sheet: choose a compatible guide and support the sheet along its length; if it is too unwieldy to handle safely, rough-cut it on a suitable sacrificial surface before final sizing.
- For repeat cuts: use a fence or compatible guide and keep the panel consistently registered against it.
- For every cut: match blade specifications to the saw and cut, and follow the saw manufacturer’s safety instructions.
WOOD Magazine’s 13 pointers are technique guidance; Kreg’s blade and guide recommendations come from a tool manufacturer with a commercial interest in its products. Neither source establishes through comparative testing that one saw, blade count, or guide is best for every plywood cut.
