Grow dahlias in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil, and time planting around your local frost risk. Choose a variety suited to your space: compact dahlias work in pots and border fronts, while taller types need room and usually need staking. The key early-care rule is to keep dormant tubers only slightly moist until shoots appear; once plants are growing, water consistently without leaving the soil soggy.
Choose a dahlia and a growing site
Match the variety’s mature size to the space and the flowers you want. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says shorter bedding dahlias up to 60 cm (2 ft) suit containers and the front of borders; most dahlias reach about 1.2 m (4 ft), and some exceed 2 m (6½ ft). Tall varieties need sturdy support, while dwarf bedding types may not.
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, free-draining soil. For containers, select a compact variety and use a high-quality potting mix. Single-flowered varieties are identified by the RHS as best for pollinators. The RHS lists around 120 dahlia cultivars with its Award of Garden Merit, a useful indication of performance in its trials, not a guarantee for every garden. See the RHS guide to growing dahlias.
When and how to plant tubers or young plants
Planting dates depend on your climate and whether you are planting a dormant tuber or an actively growing plant. The RHS dates below are for UK conditions; elsewhere, use local last-frost guidance rather than copying the calendar.

- Rooted cuttings or tubers started indoors: Start them in pots in spring and keep them frost-free. Gradually acclimatize growing plants before moving them to their flowering site after frost danger has passed. In the RHS’s UK guidance, this is usually late May or early to mid-June in colder areas.
- Dormant tubers planted directly outdoors: The RHS says these can be planted in the UK in mid- to late April, before the last frost, because shoots emerge later. They may flower later than plants started indoors.
Starting dormant tubers in pots
Place the tuber with its old stem connection or crown uppermost, just below the compost surface. Keep the pot in good light and the compost only slightly moist while shoots develop. Too much water before growth begins can rot the tuber. Planting instructions vary by source and setting: UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR) advises placing tubers horizontally 1–2 inches deep, while the RHS describes positioning the crown just below the surface for indoor starting. Follow guidance suited to your region and planting method rather than treating one depth as universal. See UCANR’s dahlia guidance.
Planting in beds or containers
Prepare beds with fertile, free-draining soil and incorporate organic matter. The RHS recommends spacing standard plants about 60 cm (2 ft) apart. For one standard dahlia, it suggests a container around 50 cm (20 in) wide; up to three small bedding dahlias may be grouped in a pot that size. Containers dry faster than garden beds, so plan to check their moisture regularly.

Water and feed for steady growth
Water after planting, then keep actively growing plants evenly moist without waterlogging them. Water needs rise in hot weather and as flowers form. Water near the roots; Oregon State University Extension notes that tubers can rot if they are kept wet before shoots emerge. The RHS recommends mulching after planting with organic matter, such as homemade compost or well-rotted manure, while leaving a gap around stems. Its guide says this mulch usually provides adequate feeding for dahlias in the ground.
For container plants, the RHS recommends potassium-rich liquid feed to support flowering. UCANR advises against high-nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage foliage at the expense of blooms. Avoid applying a universal feeding schedule without considering soil, container mix and growing conditions.

Stake, pinch and deadhead
Support taller varieties
Put a sturdy stake in place when planting, if possible, and tie stems as they grow. Dwarf bedding dahlias may not need support; taller plants are more likely to need it, particularly in exposed or windy gardens. Oregon State University Extension describes stakes at least 4–5 feet tall, but choose a height and strength suited to the variety’s expected size and conditions.
Encourage branching or larger blooms
To encourage a bushier plant with more flowering stems, the RHS advises pinching out the main shoot when it reaches about 40 cm (16 in), just above a pair of leaves. If your goal is fewer, larger flowers for cutting or showing, remove smaller buds behind the central bud. Disbudding is optional and is not needed for an ordinary border display.

Slugs and snails can damage young shoots, and aphids may gather on new growth. Other reported problems include powdery mildew, earwigs, capsid bugs, caterpillars, mites, viruses and leafy gall. Check plants regularly, especially new growth, and identify the problem before choosing a treatment. UCANR advises removing infected leaves when managing powdery mildew. Good airflow and watering at the roots also help avoid persistently damp foliage.

Decide how to protect dahlias over winter
Whether to lift tubers depends on local winter frost risk, soil drainage and winter wet. In frost-prone regions, tubers may need to be lifted and stored somewhere frost-free. In milder areas, they may survive in the ground with protection, provided conditions are suitable. Check local horticultural guidance before deciding: a mild minimum temperature alone does not settle the question if the soil stays wet.
The RHS growing guide confirms that overwintering options vary, but detailed storage instructions should be taken from guidance for your location. Avoid relying on a storage temperature or packing method without a source suited to your climate.
