Historic records identify Leedskalnin as its builder and describe limestone sculptures weighing as much as 30 tons; the available sources do not, however, establish a complete step-by-step account of how he moved and shaped every stone. The evidence supports a remarkable human construction project, not proof of levitation or another paranormal force.
What is Coral Castle?
Coral Castle is a garden of monumental stone sculptures made by Leedskalnin in southern Dade County. The National Register of Historic Places describes it as a rock sculpture garden assembled by one individual during the 1920s and 1930s, with monolithic limestone sculptures weighing up to 30 tons each. The museum calls the material coral rock and says Leedskalnin used more than 1,100 tons of it over three decades. The tonnage is the museum’s figure, not an independent measurement.
The National Register’s statement of significance places the work in the context of Leedskalnin’s interests and life: “The nationally recognized site was the monument Leedskalnin dedicated to his lifetime passions: hard work, astronomic and engineering experimentation and his lost love.” That description is broader than the familiar story that he built the site solely because of a romance.
Coral Castle began as Rock Gate in Florida City. Visit Florida reports that Leedskalnin moved it roughly ten miles north to Homestead in 1936. This relocation account comes from a secondary travel-history source.

How was Coral Castle built?
The most defensible answer is that Leedskalnin built it using tools and methods that have not been fully reconstructed in the sources cited here. The museum says he used primitive tools, many made largely from old car parts, and no modern machinery. That description does not establish that he worked without mechanical advantage, nor does it explain every operation involved in quarrying, shaping, lifting, or positioning the stones.
The National Register documents the scale and credits one builder; the museum describes tools and construction duration. Together, these sources establish a substantial individual building effort, but they do not supply a complete engineering account that would let readers reproduce the process or settle every detail of how particular stones were moved.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: Leedskalnin built the sculpture garden over decades, according to the museum, and historic documentation identifies him as the builder.
- Described by the museum: More than 1,100 tons of coral rock and primitive tools, many made largely from old car parts.
- Not established by these sources: A comprehensive sequence of construction steps, independent measurements of the museum’s total-tonnage figure, or proof of a supernatural lifting method.
Where the magnetism story comes from
Leedskalnin experimented with magnets and published writing about magnetism, electricity, and physics, including Magnetic Current. The museum’s science page documents those interests and writings. They are evidence of what Leedskalnin studied and claimed, not scientific validation of an extraordinary force or a demonstrated explanation for moving the castle’s stones.
The museum recounts that “Ed would only say he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids and if he could learn them, you could too.” This is the museum’s account of his words; it does not independently verify that such a secret method existed. Ordinary mechanical advantage and labor are plausible general categories for explaining stonework, but the sources here do not provide enough detail to specify exactly which techniques he used in each case.

How to distinguish the history from the legend
Coral Castle’s documented existence, monumental stonework, and attribution to Leedskalnin are not in the same evidentiary category as later stories about anti-gravity or supernatural powers. The National Register and museum describe the site and its builder. Leedskalnin’s writings reveal his own ideas. Claims that he levitated stones remain speculation in the sources cited here; no experimental validation of levitation or complete engineering reconstruction is established.
One detail that can get blurred in retellings: the museum’s exhibits page describes a three-ton triangular coral-rock directional gate that rotates 360 degrees either way. That specific description should not be conflated with popular accounts of a larger entrance gate or used to assign another gate a weight the source does not give.
