The Redtail Skyloft Van turns a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter into a two-level expedition vehicle: its insulated rooftop room adds a second climate-controlled sleeping area above a full camper interior. The $530,000 figure in the original 2024 headline is historical, not the current listed price. Redtail now lists the turnkey van at $595,000, including the Sprinter and standard equipment.
What the Skyloft Van is—and what it is not
The Skyloft is a complete, built-to-order vehicle based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 XD AWD high-roof chassis with a 170-inch wheelbase. Its signature feature is a hard-sided rooftop camper integrated into the van. Redtail says the Skyloft camper is exclusive to the complete build and is not sold separately; it is not an add-on tent a buyer can simply install on another van.
The $530,000 framing comes from coverage published in 2024, including New Atlas’s February 7, 2024 article and Overland Expo’s historical headline. Redtail’s current FAQ and order page list the turnkey vehicle at $595,000. Redtail says that current price includes the base Sprinter and standard equipment; options and availability can change, so confirm the live terms directly before ordering.
How the two-level layout works
Upstairs: a separate sleeping room
The rooftop Skyloft is a fully insulated carbon-fiber composite camper with a folding-wall system, electronic latch and interior access hatch. Redtail lists a 55-by-78-by-3.5-inch mattress. The concept is an upstairs bedroom that remains part of the vehicle’s climate-controlled living arrangement, rather than a soft-sided rooftop tent exposed to the weather.

Downstairs: lounge, galley and bath
The rear U-shaped lounge converts into a full-size widthwise bed, giving the van a second sleeping area. The lower cabin also includes a wet bath with shower and toilet options, plus a galley with a built-in and portable induction cooktop, stainless sink, double-drawer refrigerator/freezer and convection microwave.
A rear storage garage provides space for bulky recreation gear. Redtail says it can accommodate a full-size mountain bike or as many as four pairs of skis up to 190 cm long. Actual usable space for a particular load will depend on its shape and on other gear carried.

Published specifications and capacities
The figures below are Redtail’s published specifications for its current-production, 2026-model-year van. The company cautions that dimensions, components and equipment may vary with configuration and options, and that specifications can change.

Payload deserves particular attention. Redtail warns that trailer tongue weight counts against the van’s payload, and that the combined van and trailer must remain within the 15,250-pound GCWR. The published maximum payload is not a promise that a finished, optioned van has that much capacity available for passengers, water and equipment; the delivered vehicle’s weight and loading matter.

Off-grid systems and four-season equipment
Redtail lists a 14 kWh Volta lithium system, 3,200 W inverter, 330 W solar array and shore-power connection. Water equipment includes heated and insulated tanks, UV and carbon-block purification, on-demand hot water and one-button winterization. These are published equipment details, not independent performance test results.
For heating and cooling, the current specification page lists diesel-fired heat, in-floor heat and a 12,000 BTU, 48-volt air-conditioning system. Redtail describes the rooftop room as a four-season camper. As with any off-grid vehicle, usable comfort and time between hookups depend on conditions, energy use, water consumption and how the vehicle is equipped.

Size and weight are practical trade-offs
The upstairs room adds sleeping space without taking over the lower lounge, but the resulting vehicle is 25 feet 6 inches long and 10 feet 6 inches high. Those dimensions, along with an approximately 9,600-pound curb weight, affect where the van can go and how much people and cargo it can carry. The 1,430-pound maximum payload is a key limit to evaluate against the actual build, occupants, water, supplies and any trailer load.
Before comparing it with another expedition van, check the delivered configuration’s weight and payload—not just the headline capacities. Also compare usable beds and secure travel seats, garage access, electrical and water capacity, heating and cooling, total dimensions, price, and delivery timing. The published specifications provide some of those figures, but do not establish the number of secure travel seats.

Current price, options and ordering
Redtail currently lists a $595,000 turnkey price, including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter base vehicle and standard equipment. Its listed options include Starlink in-motion satellite internet, a rear winch, dedicated dish storage and upgraded leather seating. Prices and options may change.
Redtail says 2027 orders are open and sales are limited to the United States. The company lists a $25,000 deposit to secure a build slot, followed by progress payments tied to build milestones. Buyers select vehicle color and interior materials, then take delivery in Boulder, Colorado, with a two-day walkthrough. The order page gives a typical 14–16 month lead time; confirm current availability, timing and terms with Redtail before committing.
What is announced for Gen 2
Redtail’s Gen 2 announcement describes a one-piece Skyloft shell, a custom Garmin control interface and independent climate zones for the main cabin and upstairs room. The company says Gen 2 is expected on the road in July 2027. These are announced future-model features, not equipment to assume on the current production van; Redtail says Gen 2 specifications are still being finalized.
