Plan the layout and look first, then choose products labeled for the place and duration of use, install them according to their instructions, and inspect them before plugging in.
What “build your own” should mean
For a home display, “build your own” can mean choosing the shape, colors, lamp styles, and placement, then arranging suitable finished products to create that design. It should not mean assembling a mains-voltage light string from individual electrical parts: the cited safety guidance does not provide or validate a consumer wiring design.
In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes seasonal and decorative lighting products as portable, plug-connected, temporary-use products with nominal 120-volt input. It identifies minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection as important safety characteristics; products missing one or more present a risk of electric shock or fire. CPSC says, “The presence of these three characteristics reduces the risk of electrical shock or fire.” Its rule does not mean every light set must be UL certified: the agency also clarifies that its 15(j) rule does not itself create a consumer product safety standard or trigger testing or certification requirements under CPSA section 14(a). Choose the right kind of light string
Seasonal strings and all-year string lights are different product categories. UL 588 Edition 19 covers temporary-use seasonal decorative lighting products and accessories rated up to 120 volts for use under the National Electrical Code; it defines temporary use as installation and use for no more than 90 days. The standard includes factory-assembled seasonal strings with specified lamp-holder types, as well as other decorative outfits. See UL 588’s scope.

UL’s guidance describes additional wire-gauge, insulation, flexing, strain-relief, instruction, and marking requirements for all-year products. Do not treat an ordinary seasonal string as a permanent-installation product. Read UL Solutions’ explanation of all-year string lights.
Plan the display before buying
- Sketch the route. Mark the roofline, porch, windows, trees, or other features you want to illuminate. Note where the display is indoors or outdoors and where power is available, so the selected products and cords suit the actual placement.
- Choose the appearance. Decide on colors, lamp styles, and whether the lights will outline a structure or accent selected features. These are design choices; the sources cited here do not establish comparative brightness, energy use, color rendering, lifespan, or cost.
- Select complete products and compatible accessories. A search for “C9 Christmas lights” or “C9 replacement bulbs” can help locate a product category, but it does not establish that a particular set or bulb is suitable. Check the exact product rating, indoor/outdoor designation, socket base, and manufacturer’s compatibility instructions before purchase. UL 588 covers certain factory-assembled strings and specified replaceable lamp-holder configurations; that does not certify every bulb or combination.
- Match the product to how long it will stay installed. For seasonal use, choose a seasonal string rated for its location. If the lights will remain installed year-round, select a product explicitly intended for all-year use and follow its installation instructions and applicable code.
UL Solutions says its UL Listing Mark indicates that engineers evaluated and tested representative samples for fire, electric-shock, and other hazards against UL requirements. Its guidance describes a green holographic label for indoor-only light strings and a red holographic label for strings intended for indoor or outdoor use. Check the actual label and instructions rather than relying on appearance alone; a listed component does not make an improvised assembly safe. See UL Solutions’ holiday-lighting safety guidance.

Install and check the display safely
- Use lights tested for safety by an independent laboratory, and follow the product’s label and instructions.
- Before use, check new and old strings for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Do not use a damaged set; discard it or have it repaired before use. Do not open or splice a mains-voltage string based on generic online advice.
- Secure outdoor lights so wind cannot damage them. Use fastening methods suitable for the surface and the product instructions.
- Connect no more than three standard-size sets to a single extension cord, as CPSC advises. Follow the product instructions and applicable electrical requirements; this limit is not a general permission to connect strings without regard to their ratings.
- Do not overload outlets or power strips, and do not connect power strips together. Turn powered decorations off when leaving home or going to sleep.
These steps follow the CPSC’s holiday decoration safety sheet and UL Solutions’ fire-prevention guidance. UL’s article, dated November 14, 2025, attributes annual estimates to NFPA: 832 U.S. home structure fires related to holiday decorations, excluding Christmas-tree fires; three civilian deaths; 28 civilian injuries; and $17 million in property damage. The article does not state the period underlying those averages. Separately, it reports NFPA’s estimate that lamps or bulbs are involved in 24% of Christmas-tree fires; that percentage concerns tree fires, not the decoration-related home fires above.

If your plan depends on cutting, splicing, rewiring, or combining electrical parts in a way the manufacturer does not authorize, pause rather than treating the project as a routine decorating task. The cited consumer guidance supports choosing and safely installing complete products; it does not establish a safe DIY wiring design. For a display that needs a permanent or unusual electrical installation, use products specifically intended for that use and consult a qualified electrician about applicable local code.
